Movie Info

A three-part depiction of various forms of communication. 'Exhaustive Discussion' depicts three heads (made up of fruit, kitchen utensils and writing implements respectively) endlessly devouring and regurgitating each other. 'Passionate Discourse' shows two clay figures romantically intertwined, and the problems with dealing with the end product of their passion, while 'Factual Conversation' shows two animated heads playing a bizarre variant of the old scissors-paper-stone game.

Split into three categories this stunningly animated short film awed the mind. It was split into three sections and I can only imagine the patience it took to create them. The first section where the figures were made of pans, fruits, or clay would start mixing and creating new figures showed Svanmajers patience in making this fluent. The second where to clay figures start having intimate relations and end up destroying each other was very creative. Like the third section with two heads using there tools to help each other, at first succeeding and later hilariously failing. It was unique and to the point, thus far it's the best shirt film I've seen.

I was set to watch Svankmajer's "Little Otik" but I got sidetracked and it wound up being super-late, so I settled for what was probably his most well-known short. Trippy! It's divided into three parts: Exhaustive Discussion, Passionate Discourse, and Factual Conversation. Each part is pretty representative of its title; the exhaustive discussion is quite haywire, with tons of rapid shots of everyday items forming these two monstrous walking heads that constantly reshape one another; the second part, passionate discourse, is about two heads making love to each other and dissolving into the other while doing so (at times it was really beautiful), and the third part was, again, two heads, sticking a handful of everyday objects out of their mouths via tongue, and clashing them together in a variety of combinations, including the "correct" combination to start before switching positions and getting it all wrong. Svankmajer definitely has this frenzied and nightmarish visceral effect going on. The stop-motion is interesting but I think the real idea behind this work is to make a statement metaphorically, which I feel he does. Each part does represent a particular dimension of dialogue quite well and ranges from scary to beautiful at different parts.
