... if there's aridness in the landscape, then barely none of it inhabits the heart of these compassionate travelers.

The best part is the gorgeous scenery we see as Fern travels the country. While I understand what this movie is trying to do, it is too slow and depressing for my liking.

Nomadland looks both sociological and touristy; it's a visual lecture teaching America to pity itself.

As an evocative portrait of a largely forgotten people living on the margins of the American economy, this film is nearly flawless ... a stunning tour de force for Chloé Zhao and Frances McDormand.

Zao has a deep understanding of the unconventional, transient society that's seen a boom during recent hard times in our country, and she treats her restless characters with a poetic respect.

It's quiet and spare in a way I admired more than I actively loved.

More than most road movies, this is a series of brief encounters, of short, intense friendships and sad farewells. As Wells says, "I'll see you down the road."

The least actressy of actresses, McDormand merges completely with the landscape and everybody in it. The friendships that Fern makes spring from a collective store of commonsense gained from experience and coloured with playful good humour.

There shouldn't be any fudging around the fact that while Nomadland is a moving and absorbing portrait with a lot of heart, that heart is a singularly heavy one...So don't be surprised, or ashamed, should you get a bit misty-eyed.

Personally, I found it to be pretty much the perfect film for 2020; a paean to all people who have re-examined their lives, shifted their priorities and rediscovered the profound magic of empathy and quiet resilience. You'll quite probably love it too.
