Audience Reviews for Of Wanderlust

½

I doubt road movie buffs will glean much from this half-documentary beyond perhaps some nostalgia for the less memorable films discussed. However, audiences looking to further their road movie vocabulary should find this a suitable place to start forming a 'to see' list. We are taken through the genre's history by the people who created both the classics and the esoteric gems - most of the interviews are too brief to be enlightening, but foreign directors like Wim Wenders, and even Mira Nair, present unique perspectives on the mystique of the American road. Other notable voices include Gas, Food, Lodging director Allison Anders and Easy Rider's ever-cheerfully aloof Dennis Hopper. Unfortunately, Wanderlust's directors decided to add some 'variety' to their film by periodically cutting away from the interviews and film clips to follow a dumbly scripted subplot following two film nerds on a road trip. Enter Paul Rudd, shamelessly mugging to fill time. Fast-forward those bits and Wanderlust becomes a fair tributary crash course.
