      What to know

      Critics Consensus

It may suffer in comparison to Pixar's classics, but Onward makes effective use of the studio's formula -- and stands on its own merits as a funny, heartwarming, dazzlingly animated adventure. Read critic reviews

Chock full of contrivances and just straight up contradictions, both which annoyed me to a pretty severe degree, but there was enough cutesy stuff in my lane to keep me from actively disliking it. Not a fan of the naming convention though.

In terms of Pixar's catalogue, Onward is I guess…standard. But by Pixar rankings, that's still very good. There's a lot of creativity behind it, some very tense moments, some incredibly heartfelt moments, and some pretty funny moments. However, it's never quite as good as it could be. It's consistently charming, but with a premise this good it's never as good as it could be. I love this premise, honestly I wish we would see the urban fantasy setting way more often. Why do elves and orcs always have to be stuck in the middle ages? But the fact that they're elves in modern times never really affects the plot all that much. A little tweaking and honestly you could take it out, it doesn't affect that much. It's still creative though, and does lead to some very fun sequences, but it never goes far enough. Same thing with the comedy, it's good, but it's never as funny as it could be. The characters, however, make the film work. The brothers relationship is relatable and pure, it carries the whole thing. They're quest is also highly relatable, and the final moments are tearjerkers. However, as an older brother with a deceased father, this might be a subject that hits me harder than it will some other viewers. The other characters are good though too, especially the mom and the manticore who are on their own simultaneous road trip. Overall Onward is good, but it's never great. It's charming and likable and heartfelt, and it did affect me on a personal level, but it doesn't hit the perfect note. Still, it's a really good movie, even if it isn't a great one.

Onward is one of those Pixar films that has little to no heart. This is more a Dreamworks or Disney product, not the Pixar model. I enjoyed the films style and it's still a lot of fun to watch. There's enough here to stop it from being boring, but even with the CONVID-19 virus pandemic, this film might've struggled to find an audience. I miss the old era of Pixar when they wouldn't put out anything without it being a great product. There's been a lot of misses in their latter works and I can only suggest this is the direct impact of having Disney as your owner. The characters are fun and it's a worthy film to watch, but it's not a classic or a Pixar film. Onward feels out of place in their library. 08/04/2020

In a world that has forgotten its magical roots the son of a dead, but missed, magician discovers an opportunity to resurrect his father. This "value of the family" film does its work - distracting the little ones for a couple of hours - but little more than that. It is made by Pixar, garnering some respect for that fact, but Pixar-lite here. Great animation, as usual, but nothing to blow your mind. The world building? Derivative of Disney's Maleficent, with not enough time between the two to forget the difference. Meh.
