William Goss Austin Chronicle 01/29/2015
Much of The Phone Call's drama plays purely and remarkably on Hawkins' increasingly desperate face, which in turn makes the upbeat coda feel jarringly disingenuous... Go to Full Review

Three of the five nominees are about women, and it's hardly a surprise that their fresh perspective results in stories that are new and original. Go to Full Review

True, most of these films deal with depressing subject matter like illness, loneliness and government suppression, but just about all of them inspire hope and belief in the human spirit. Go to Full Review

The nominated live-action shorts this year are an international and multilingual lot, as they usually are (and as nominated feature films usually are not)... Go to Full Review

Jeffrey N 02/27/2015 I gave this year's shorts 5 stars this year because the genuinely wonderful set included probably the best short I've seen since watching these the past half-decade. "The Phone Call," which won the Oscar for this category, definitely deserved recognition as it was a moving story of a man calling to talk to a Suicide Prevention Hotline operator just as he is dying from the pills he took because his wife had recently passed. However, "Aya" just blew me away. I was captivated by its story, its lead actors and how strongly the filmmaker guided the viewer not just through the film, but through the emotions of the two main characters. They were all original, but I"m not sure why Parvaneh got nominated. Butter Lamp was clever about taking photos of Chinese. Aya held my attention for 39 min but that's too long to be considered a short in my opinion!! My pick for the Oscar goes to Boogaloo and Graham set in Ireland with little boys and their pet chickens. Three of the films have a similar theme of the insights that come from, and intimacy that can develop between strangers. The film from China was the creative - and left me wanting to know more about what's going on. See more Aditya M 02/14/2015 A nice little collection. My favourites, in order are: 1. Aya - A ride full of laughs, jolts and surprises, in more ways than one. 2. Butter Lamp - Splendid bit of humour and irony 3. Bugaloo and Graham - Perhaps the most outright funny of the shorts. Spirited performances by the two kids. 4. The Phone Call - Sally Hawkins nails a difficult role about a difficult subject. Tense and moving. 5. Parvaneh - A pleasant but ordinary tale about a diffident Afghani immigrant forming an unlikely friendship with a rebellious Swiss girl. Wouldn't be surprised if this is the one that ends up winning.
