Jennie Kermode Eye for Film Mar 9
3.5/5
A first stab at directing for actor Craig Conway, Red Riding scores high on atmosphere and is grounded by a strong central performance. Go to Full Review

3/5
Its central mystery is engaging, but there’s little here which will surprise horror fans. Still, it’s a well-made, if slightly dog-eared work of homespun gothic horror. Go to Full Review
Kat Hughes THN Mar 8
3/5
Red Riding takes a familiar story, subverts aspects, and filters it through the depressing British melodrama genre, blending with conventional horror to create a movie that becomes increasingly more uncomfortable to endure. Go to Full Review

TheMovieSearch R @TheMovieSearch 7h Red Riding caught my attention because I expected a modern twist on Red Riding Hood, and while it borrows pieces of that familiar tale with the young girl, her grandmother, and werewolf elements, it never fully commits to that direction. I will say the production quality is much stronger than many recent independent films I’ve watched. The cinematography and overall presentation made it easier to stay engaged. Unfortunately, the screenplay is where everything begins to fall apart. The story feels scattered, unfocused, and never quite figures out what it wants to be. I understand the themes involving addiction, trauma, and personal struggles, but they feel forced into the narrative instead of developing naturally. When a film tries too hard to make every moment symbolic, it loses its emotional impact. There are good ideas throughout, but they never come together into a satisfying story. It’s watchable because of its production quality, but the storytelling ultimately makes no sense See more Melissa L @Agent99 Jun 30 Yes, at times this movie is a hard one to watch, but you can always close your eyes, or forward the parts. I really liked this movie as a whole, and I also liked the ending. See more Michael C @Movies121985 Jun 1 So damn Evil!!!!!!!!!!! It pulls you in just enough to keep watching, even if the payoff feels a bit underwhelming. Not a bad film, just a somewhat weak one that had more potential than it delivered. See more Jay C @RT31065980 Apr 5 Red Riding isn’t what you think from the title. If you are expecting a horror flick or werewolf movie then you’ll be a bit dissapointed. The lead actress, Victoria Tate does an excellent job in her role. She’s worth a star all by herself. The rest of the cast leave much to be desired. The film has a great premise but the story telling has awful pacing. The three stars I’m giving is for what the film could’ve been if Tate would’ve had any support from her cast mates and the director. I figured since Conway had been in Dog Soldiers maybe he knew a little something about directing. Clearly I was wrong. There is quite a bit out there that is much better but if you like gothic settings and a bit of family trauma, give it a go. If anything , to give this young actress a chance at something else. She deserves it. See more Angelo P. @Darksev92 Apr 2 A brutal and gory slow burn that is a very interesting addition to the Folk horror sub genre of Horror films. See more Read all reviews
