Although it runs just under an hour, the gripping documentary "Rescue in the Philippines: Refuge From the Holocaust" proves a thorough look at a lesser-known chapter in Holocaust-era history. Go to Full Review

01/29/2016 I watched this short documentary film at Asia Society Houston TX on February 26th 2016. I really loved this documentary film. This is an educational and informative movie. If you are interested in the Philippines and history,Please watch it. The title indicates that this movie is about the Philippines and jewish refugees from Nazi Germany in Europe. It is kind hidden history of Jewish in the Philippines. The Philippine accepted many Jewish refugees.I did not know the fact. The president Manuel Quezon was a great leader. He had a lot of great achievements.Actually, the name of Quezon city is from his surname. He welcomed Jewish refugees from Europe during the Nazi era.Accepting the jewish refugees were one of his greatest achievement during his presidency. I really enjoyed the Philippines in the 1930's. Manila was very Americanized and Europeanized city. The Philippine was a former Spanish and American colony. On the other hand,I could see very Asian peasants in the 1930's on this movie. The five Frieder brothers, Cincinnati businessmen making cigars in Manila, saved many refugees with Manuel Quezon. This movie described how the family saved many refugees. However, the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor changed history. Japan occupied the Philippine. Japanese considered the Jewish in the Philippine as " Germans".Japanese simply judged from their passport.Although japanese occupation was so brutal in the Philippines. I am sorry about that, The battle of Manila destroyed the city and Jewish communities, after the war, people rebuilt a jewish temple. It seemed that the most of the refugees left the country. We learned a lot of facts such as the president Eisenhower's contribution's to the Philippines. He stayed in the Philippine in the 1930's.The most of Americans didn't know that. I am from Japan and live in the United states. It was an interesting movie.i really appreciate today's peaceful relationships between Japan and both the USA&the Philippines. We are friends.I have a lot of friends from the Philippines, that's the reason why I watched this movie. This movie is very informative and educational. The Filipinos are nice people. They welcome everyone. This is the most important thing which I learned in this movie. If you are interested in history, pleas watch this movie.Salamat. Thank you. See more 04/09/2013 "The people of the Philippines will have in the future every reason to be glad that when the time of need came, their country was willing to extend a hand of welcome." --- Philippine President Manuel L. Quezon. When I was younger, the Holocaust had always seemed solely confined to Europe, something that happened so far away and so long ago. But as I grew older and learned more about the war especially on the Pacific side, I also became pretty familiar with Mr. Schindler's heroism during the Holocaust but it had often crossed my mind what actions the Philippines had taken in regards to the Holocaust, if any at all. I'm incredibly surprised and proud that our little island nation, or rather the current president then, had chosen to extend a helping hand. It warms my heart to watch this documentary and I'm glad the story has finally come to light, I only wished my dad had lived long enough to learn of this too because he was such a huge World War II buff and I believe, like then President Quezon stated, it would have made him proud.
