The Hollywood romantic comedy hits an astonishing new low with this disastrous pairing for Pierce Brosnan and Salma Hayek.
Mainly the comic outcomes of these setups are painfully predictable and when they aren't ... they border on the offensive.
A 99-minute film that seems to last for three hours ... one of the worst films to sport the label "romantic comedy."
A string of hackneyed situations and faux "edgy" humor you wouldn't find on even the worst episode of "Frasier."
The sentimental side of the back half of the film doesn't fit with the bedroom farce sensibilities going before.
Sometimes, [the film] wants to be light farce, all repartee and two-dimensional characters; other times it wants to be a contender, with deathbed scenes and motivating lectures on romantic poetry. At all times it's a tremendous waste of talent.
Regardless of the cliches or predictability, Some Kind of Beautiful is a fun, breezy, and upbeat offering that allows Brosnan the opportunity to put a shine on that charming accent of his.
Contrived and ridiculous, and that is before Malcolm McDowell, 72, turns up as 62-year-old Brosnan's father, but the ever charming former 007 offers some compensation as the silliness mounts.
Isn't funny or romantic in the least.
Some Kind of Beautiful is a movie that is clearly in trouble: you can see it in the editing, in the sudden appearance of minor characters with no real role to play.
I'm filing it under "guilty pleasure".
A film like this essentially suffers from what one might call like the domino cliché effect. Once the first cliché hits, it's impossible to stop the rest.
Some Kind of Beautiful is a quirky romantic comedy that's kind of fun. After learning that his girlfriend is pregnant poetry professor Richard Haig gives up his teaching position in order to start a family, but when the relationship falls apart he tries to work something out that will allow him to stay in his son's life. Pierce Brosnan, Salma Hayek, and Jessica Alba lead the cast and do a fairly good job at handling the lighthearted comedy. But the writing is rather weak, relying on a lot of tropes and needless plot contrivances. And the jokes can be a little hit-and-miss. Still, Some Kind of Beautiful is an entertaining film that has a bit of charm to it.
I have to say this was not as bad as I thought it would be. With solid performances throughout and a great performance from Pierce Brosnan this romantic comedy has more going for it than most where it counts.
