Movie Info

This film follows one unit of the Afghan National Army over the course of their first year of deployment in Helmand without NATO support. It is an intimate film about the human side of combat, told from a largely unheard and misrepresented perspective, that explores the deep personal motivations, desires and struggles of a band of fighting men on the frontline. Without a NATO soldier in sight, and no narrative but their own, this is the war in Afghanistan, through the eyes of the Afghans who live it.

More a lament than a straightforward narrative.

Ruminations upon the fate of young men forced to the frontline by harsh economics serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing price of this conflict, with irregular pay, substandard supplies and the spectre of death an everyday reality.

A troubling treatise on the human aspect of warfare.

Unfortunately, although it conveys plenty of the tedium of soldiering, there's little of the drama that I assume it also features.
