Emotionally charged comedy drama about a strong willed mother and her children, evocative of powerful nostalgia about childhood and what it means to be a family.

A Beautiful Movie...

A movie about a wonderful woman which unconventional way of life and her own beauty makes her suspicious for everybody around her, including her family and the spectator. One of the intelligent approaches of this well-made movie is that plays with you and appearances, telling (without telling) hidden things, or making you think something to discover you a while later that you were wrong (there are even facts which are not clear, and you can think whatever you want about! -that explains so many different interpretations about the film in the different comments). A movie about feelings which mixes emotion with joy with sadness, and which shows the aspects of either desire to live life with meannes. Nice to watch.

An absolutely superb film about love, life, and family. The writing is brilliant as are the performances.

Powerful, beautiful and touching. A pure delight to watch. If you liked "Cinema Paradiso" you will love this one, too.

I am not overly fond of Italian films in general, but this one was good enough. The cinematography was highly touted, being nominated for a handful of awards and getting mentioned on the back of the netflix package. The actress playing the old and dying mother won a Golden Globe in 2010. I disagree. That was a weak link in the film, I thought. The actress playing the younger version of the same woman...well she at least won a spot in my heart. Daywum.

I'm not sure what this movie is. Kind of an epic feel as it spans several decades. Two children, namely the boy, struggle growing up with their beautiful mother. Is it a tragedy? Much like the movie Malena, also Italian and featuring poster girl Monica Belluci, might be a similar movie where a woman's attractiveness turns out to be her downfall. Oh, what a perfect setting then: Italy. But that may just be a subplot. The mother, while making bad decisions or having them made for her, is not mean. So the boy who takes it all personally may just be his own biggest problem.

The ending is maybe the strongest part of the movie. Drama probably comes to a peak in the final 10 minutes, and some character traits are revealed. Probably should have seen it coming, but that does not make them less impacting and less damaging. Either way, just look at that cast to the left of this box. How could it get any less than a 7/10?

Surpreendentemente bom (para quem, como eu, desconfia de dramas italianos contemporâneos). Ou eu à (C) que estava em um bom dia para um bom drama familiar: prato cheio! :)

"The First Beautiful Thing" may not be everyone's glass of Chianti. Set in Livorno, with magnificent cinematography, this meandering Italian family saga jumps back and forth in time erratically . By the film's end, we "get it," but what an emotional roller coaster ride to reach an all too predictable, soporific conclusion. Performances are nuanced, but it is often a challenge to try and figure out who "goes with" whom. In sum, we learn the beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and it is often a challenge to discover.

Marvelous film about the life of a family. Full of choices and changes which sometimes work out but often don't and the joys, regrets and reversals which result. Never seems forced or contrived as the family grows from the early 70s through 2009 or so.
