The Happytime Murders Reviews

The connoisseur of filth within me is pleased to report how wonderfully nasty much of the felted proceedings here are to behold.

Fatally confuses crassness with subversion.

"The Happytime Murders" is, basically, disgusting. But even when it's reprehensible, it's not always bad.

This premise holds some promise, but The Happytime Murders is a joyless, soulless slog, wasting the efforts of co-stars Melissa McCarthy and Elizabeth Banks. (Only Maya Rudolph, playing Phil's ditzy but puppet-tolerant secretary Bubbles, escapes pity.)

A few critics are calling it the worst movie of the year. Unfair! This R-rated look at a serial killer running wild in a puppet-populated L.A., has what it takes to be a contender for worst of the decade.

Although "The Happytime Murders" isn't much fun to watch, it was clearly a blast to make.

I've been on "Sesame Street." I know Elmo. Cookie Monster is a friend of mine. "Happytime Murders," you're no "Sesame Street" . . . and you're not "Avenue Q" either.

Comedies this broad come down to percentage games and (in what has become a ritual for me, alas), I estimate less than 10 percent of screenwriter Todd Berger's jokes land.

Thanks must go to the underpaid puppeteers who crouched, ducked and manoeuvred all over Happytime's set, only for their physical labour to be used in service of a Sesame Street-meets-Bright mess.

The gags work, for awhile at least, and Berger's script is sharp enough that it never lets its juvenile edges get the best of it.

When it becomes obvious that the film is merely interested in being naughty for the sake of it, the pace sags like Kermit's limbs.

Once our initial LOL shock at the tone of "Happytime Murders" wears off, we begin hankering for something more - yet the movie is content mostly just to up the outrageousness, piling on material as liable to make us cringe as laugh.

Everything about the movie is stunted - from the running time to the production values to the story.

...we just keep hoping the filmmakers will cut this thing short, and they do, and we thank them for that.

What starts off as an amusing idea quickly crosses the line from lewd to crude, with sex jokes both visual and verbal that don't improve with repetition.

The knowing handling of noir conventions and clever metaphor for race relations of Brian Henson's R-rated fluff bath were all treated with greater grace and more panache 31 years ago in Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

In "Happytime," Jim Henson's son seeks to take Muppetry to a whole new level. Too bad that level is the sewer.

"The Happytime Murders" can't be that outrageous-it's too late-but it has its moments, several of which are provided by Ms. Rudolph, putting a spin on the girl-friday role.

The point of diminishing returns is reached about 15 minutes in.

It's entertaining enough to see once, just to say you've seen it. But it surely isn't for everyone. You've got to have a dark and dirty sense of humor.

Hardcore puppet sex and four-letter words that would make Big Bird blush sound like a googly-eyed good time until you're faced with 90 unfunny minutes of it.

It doesn't take a private eye with a heart of felt to figure out that a witless comedy with poorly executed ideas and lazy use of gross-out humor will end up DOA.

"The Happytime Murders" is a one-joke movie, minus one joke.

A cliché-ridden, laughless bore that wastes lead actress Melissa McCarthy's prodigious comic talents and beats well-trod territory with a mallet.

The Happytime Murders isn't so much interested in immersing you in a comedic world so much as it is in having its puppets do the most outrageous things you've never seen or heard puppets do in a movie.

And what are Maya Rudolph -- playing a human secretary called Bubbles -- and Elizabeth Banks doing in this thing? Calling it fluff would be too kind.

With Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Robert Zemeckis aspired to a cartoon Chinatown. For his own genre-bent L.A. noir, Henson seems only to be aiming as high as the few jokeless scenes in The Naked Gun movies.

Some mildly amusing ideas shouldn't be full-length feature films, and The Happytime Murders falls victim to that.

Can't tickle the funny bone enough to get more than a few laughs even from Elmo. It's hard to overemphasize the extent to which the puerile humor yields diminishing returns.

It's just not all that funny... Once it's clear that these are hard-R puppets with hard-R habits, it runs out of places to go.
August 22, 2018
Its most fatal miscalculation is the decision to frontload so many of its crassest setpieces into the first 15 or 20 minutes, depriving the rest of the film of the shock value that is its entire raison d'etre.
August 22, 2018
Stupefyingly risk-averse, as though its greatest aspiration were to trigger those unsuspecting parents who bought tickets for their kids.

The plot should be an excuse for comic invention, but it mostly just gets in the way, which makes me think that a feature film isn't really what Phil and his ilk need or deserve.
August 22, 2018
The "Sesame Street" folks lost the lawsuit, but nobody was ever going to confuse the two productions. For one thing, "Sesame Street" is funny. "The Happytime Murders," written by Todd Berger, is almost completely laugh-free.

The Happytime Murders is dispiriting not because it's crude but because it's so empty of wit, despite the comic firepower of McCarthy, Maya Rudolph and Elizabeth Banks -- a trio not in need of puppet assistance.
August 22, 2018
It's more than funny enough, packing lots of genuine, if frequently tasteless, laughs into its relatively brief running time.
