Dog Years

Critics Consensus

The Last Movie Star has a few poignant moments thanks to Burt Reynolds and Ariel Winter, but their performances are stranded in a middling drama unworthy of their efforts.

  • The Last Movie Star strikes a note of banality in its first sequence from which it rarely deviates.

  • In a threadbare movie that doesn't deserve him, Burt Reynolds-playing a fictional version of himself- reminds us what a great actor he can be.

  • As a commentary on Reynolds' career trajectory, The Last Movie Star is hit-or-miss. What is undeniable, though, is the space Rifkin has created where Reynolds can do what Reynolds does best.

  • The director Adam Rifkin wrote this showcase for Mr. Reynolds, who, like Vic, was a college football player. "The Last Movie Star" effectively allows the ever-assured actor to score a touchdown on an empty field.

Audience Reviews for The Last Movie Star

  • Dec 16, 2019
There are moments in this movie that are cringeworthy; scenes that feel amateurish and lacking any chemistry between the cast. But, by the end of the Last Movie Star I was emotionally overwhelmed by its pathos. Burt Reynolds was always an outstanding actor. Even when he was starring in formulaic movies made with one purpose in mind: open strong because word of mouth was surely not gong to help grosses by week two. Here, Reynolds summons up his ability to connect with the camera like only movie stars can. By the time the movie is over it's difficult not to appreciate this under-budgeted tribute to a real movie star.
