Movie Info

British filmmaker Derek Jarman combines his standard erotic imagery with innovative documentary techniques in his Last of England. The film traces the decline and fall of Britain as seen from the vantage points of London and Belfast. Old home movies, newly shot hand-held 8 millimeter photography, "straight" newsreel-style footage and a barrage of familiar music and street sounds all combine to create a jaw-dropping mosaic of apocalyptic allusions. Obviously not geared to everyone's taste, Last of England is an eloquent cry of anguish from one of the most accomplished British filmmakers of the 1980s. Jarman also wrote the book on which this film is based. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

An impressionistic portrait of decaying late-80s Britain by avant-garde filmmaker Derek Jarman, THE LAST OF ENGLAND is an obscure and highly personal mixture of poetry, music, overlapping dialogue, and ever-shifting, manipulated, distorted images. Poetic and highly impressive, but after ninety minutes of rambling beauty mixed with tedium, it reminds you why shorts are the preferred vehicle for abstract experimental films.

Directed by Derek Jarman, "The Last of England" is different from his other films that I have seen("Edward II", "Wittgenstein" & "Caravaggio") which all had a minimalist aesthetic. This is certainly a unique movie which consists almost entirely of footage showing a postapocalyptic landscape, sometimes through a red filter, but also flashing back to to happier times and New York City. There is no real story to speak of, just some narration to convey alternating emotions of sadness and anger. The images are so intense that the overall effect is quite mesmerizing.

Very interesting film illustrating the revolution of England and how ppl are revolting against the political issues. Its made like an experimental film so its very artistic. Not suitable for all viewers because some of its content but still worth a shot.
