With such an acclaimed animation film as its predecessor, The Lego Movie 2 aims to up the stakes in terms of imagination and entertainment. Thankfully, it delivers in buckets.

The obvious parallels you might make won't overshadow what the barrage of glitter, color, and catchy tunes will do to make you smile, forget the mess the world is in, and enjoy your popcorn. The real world can wait.

It feels much more like a big toy commercial. One big problem I had was that it seemed predicated on very outdated gender stereotypes.

The incredible graphics remain pretty incredible and while it won't feel quite as fresh, it will still relentlessly tickle the funny bone.

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part limits itself by being predictable and not growing up as it should have.

A sequel that pulls time-and-a-half to carry all the corporate water the first one left at the bottom of a hill. To watch it feels like freebasing fifteen 5-Hour Energy drinks, and its message -play nice with siblings to get more LEGOs - is rancid.

The animation is still as smooth, colorful, and stunning throughout, but unfortunately, this time around the story isn't quite where it needs to be to make this an adventure worth another 90-minute investment.

Even though the sequel has plenty of new characters and meta-fun, the irreverent tone simply doesn't feel as special.
April 21, 2019
It's only really in the last 20 minutes of the film that it all comes together and you can appreciate what the movie is trying to say about working collaboratively and sharing something you love
April 16, 2019
A crazy moebius strip of postmodern recursive metatextuality. With songs.

Smart sequel full of jubilant energy and cynicism-free writing.
