05/10/2020 Fairly low budget but one of the very best war films ever made. A strong cast including Stanley Baker in perhaps his best role. This film shows some of the real horrors of war with officers having to make terrible decisions. The Stanley Baker character needs vital information from a Japanese informer. He refuses to talk until Baker has two innocent civilians shot by firing squad and tells the informer he will be next. The British padre - well played by Guy Rolfe, and the press reporter both claim that Baker's action was a war crime. Baker's character replies angrily that it is war. He told them - you don't object when bomber pilots press a button and kill hundreds of innocent civilians from a mile away, but when it's close up you object. This is a really gripping film that is rarely shown on television. Well worth watching. See more 05/06/2019 Tense & gripping war story, with strong acting and direction. An excellent cast, together with fine scripting combine to make this film a definite treat. Stanley Baker is the standout star. Highly-recommended. 8/10 See more Read all reviews
