In the year 2035, a biological research project intended to create an Artificial and Intelligent Cellular Organism (A.I.C.O.) goes awry, which leads to an incident known as the Burst. The Burst causes Kurobe Gorge to become infested with synthetic organisms known as Matter and cordoned off by the government. Two years later, high school student Aiko Tachibana -- who lost her family in the Burst -- learns from fellow student Yuya Kanzaki that a secret is hidden within her body and the answer to the puzzle lies at the center of the Burst, Primary Point. Aiko vows to gain access to the restricted area, with a team of divers and Yuya guiding her, to discover the secret.

Unfortunately, the anime adaptation of A.I.C.O. Incarnation is a disjointed effort. Go to Full Review

Fast-moving and full of interesting sci-fi concepts, this anime series certainly keeps your attention with intense battle scenes and rapid-fire dialogue, but little attention is put toward characterization. Go to Full Review

A.I.C.O. Incarnation's sci-fi setting and the storytelling wrapped around it can bring surprises, but the action sequences with Matter feel lacking, and the slow story development in the first half does little to impress and keep you interested. Go to Full Review

Jonathan K 06/18/2023 It's interesting -- The first few episodes do an adequate job of setting up a mystery, establishing a rather interesting partial-nightmarish future, but don't really do much to invite the viewer to anticipate what happens next, and the next several episodes are largely just quasi-mindless action scenes, which are well enough animated and high-stakes, but are frequently resolved by the heroes pulling out previously unmentioned abilities. However, the last two episodes are genuinely amazing, resulting in an emotional climax that only resonates effectively with the titular character in a compelling way, but the surprise twists at the end make absolutely perfect sense with how the story was set up to this point, yet I genuinely didn't see them coming at all. This resulted in a middling Anime series being capped off with two of the best episodes I have seen in years, for any show, in any genre. If not for these, I'd say AICO Incarnation very much falls under the category of "A decent way to kill an afternoon or two", but the last two episodes are genuinely must-see for anyone who likes high-concept Sci-Fi. Because of this, I strongly recommend this series to any serious fan of hi-concept Sci-Fi; just note that the show, until these last two episodes, is generally rather mediocre, and will likely require the mantra: "It gets better - It gets better."
