It continues to play like an audition, a justification for why she should tell her own story instead of giving us anything to see why it's worth watching. There's a lot of discussion but not nearly enough action to keep the show compelling. Go to Full Review

The docuseries is in many ways a win for representation... But as a work of art, it feels about as deep and candid as a model's Instagram feed. Go to Full Review

What makes it interesting to watch is that her life isn't being treated as some sort of anomaly, either by the filmmakers or her family. Go to Full Review

01/07/2022 Trans man here. I mean... Yay representation? But that's about the only good thing I can say about this series. I kept waiting for something difficult or gripping to happen and nothing was ever addressed. "This one time, Jane was bullied, but her sister stood up for her and everyone is so proud." Um... okay. "This one time, Jane was gonna have a life changing surgery and it happened." What? That's it? "Sometimes trans people's lives are difficult because of stuff." Really? This what is being said in this series? The series didn't do anything bad. It was just so freaking bland. Including Jane herself. This young woman chose to come out in rural New Jersey and deal with all sorts of potential challenges. Surely she is more interesting than she seems in this series. But maybe in trying to make her seem like an average American girl they washed away all sense of real personality on the editing room floor. They did do a good job in showing how a white, middle class, generally privileged, and well functioning family can support their trans child. So that's good I guess. Very few families have those resources though. Lastly I couldn't find out if any of the producers or crew were LGBT or trans themselves. Given the milquetoast feel of this I'd guess not. It reads cis/het telling trans people stories for other cis/het people. See more 11/26/2021 A coming off age story surrounding a real transgender teen whose family is loving and supportive even though they're basically conservative. Very real and relatable characters. See more 11/18/2021 I enjoyed this window into the life of a young transgender woman. There were some tears, I will admit. Jane seems like a lovely person that anyone would be lucky to know. As a tv show, it was lacking depth and direction. It was very shallow and got unnecessarily preachy at the end. By the 4th episode, there doesn't seem to be much left to tell. Jane looks a bit bored, telling her phone that she has been working and stuff and that 8 months had gone by. Like she forgot about the documentary and was reminded to check in. A lot of emotions are built up around the surgery, but there is something lacking afterward - some summary? Was it worth it? Is life different and complete now? Jane was looking forward to her surgery as some catharsis moment, but that never arrives for the audience. Afterwards it's more about pain and boredom and then leaving home. I guess that's how it can be, but for the purpose of a documentary, it could have concluded a bit better. See more 11/14/2021 It's been a long time since I have seen authentic people telling the truth of their lives on film. Director Jonathan C. Hyde makes sure we experience the Noury family as they really are. Just a family from NJ, who has three gorgeous daughters—one who happens to be transgender. The story is their love for each other and determination that all family members have the chance to fulfill their dreams. It's a universal truth. A binge- worthy ideal. Everyone deserves the chance. Watch one episode. You won't stop. See more 11/12/2021 What a refreshing, positive, and encouraging docuseries about the journey of Jane Noury and her supportive and loving family. Instead of sensationalizing the subject matter and going the traditional "reality TV" route, Always Jane is beautifully shot, almost feeling like a movie at times. The intimate peek inside the Nourys' everyday life left me feeling so positive, even through life's more difficult moments. We've all heard the dragged through the mud stories, but we needed stories like this one to be told because they too also exist. We needed to see how an accepting family, even if they don't always have the answers at first, can change the entire experience. These days, we need to support each other - through the small things...all the way to big life-changing decisions. My hope is that Always Jane gives the courage to more teenagers going through difficult situations like Jane Noury to know they are not alone, and to find the strength to preserver. A+ for storytelling and beautiful imagery! See more Read all reviews
