With Slade and Fuller running the show, expect the violence to only get more intense from here.

It's an adaptation that feels like the story I remember, even if it does have a few more swerves and dalliances from Gaiman's text.
June 18, 2018
American Gods is as raw and as basic as stories and myths can get, while being as wild and visually stunning as a modern audience demands.

The many unfinished plot threads will continue to unwind next season, but this season ended with a satisfying reveal.

American Gods has been pretty mind-blowing so far. What's looming is not merely a clash of titans, or even a clash of individual gods - it's a clash of pantheons.

The show's creators ... have put together a show with sensuous cinematography, full, tight shots, and bold colors, plunging the viewer even further into the world of gods and magic.

American Gods is terribly slow and portentous, quite aware of its own heft. With eerie music, slow-motion sequences and a fondness for deep chiaroscuro, it comes on like a particularly long and mystical car ad.

Have faith, friends.

This is the Iliad narrated through barfights and wheat fields and walk-ups.
August 24, 2017
But as weird, sumptuous, and intermittently brilliant as American Gods may be, it's also confusing, ponderous.
August 15, 2017
American Gods has introduced new and compelling characters, balanced flourish with TV convention, and proved it can work as a television show.
June 27, 2017
American Gods is a psychedelic spree that looks like it was designed to beat down any attempt to describe it coherently.
June 19, 2017
All in all, American Gods does justice to Neil Gaiman's novel -- and as long as viewers are prepared to be a little patient, it should reveal itself as one of the best TV series of 2017.
June 2, 2017
American Gods is violent, gory, sexual, grimy and eccentric. It's also one of the most beautiful, sensual and invigorating new television series that takes every aspect of show-running Bryan Fuller is known for and accentuates it.
May 10, 2017
It's a weird and wonderful shot in the arm for TV fans looking for something a little different.
