Big Shots: Season 1 Reviews

October 9, 2019
In a nutshell: There's room for improvement; alas, evidence of such was not offered.

The show plays like a cut-rate sitcom, given a glossy drama's production values.

"Big Shots" is a big waste. If, as one character proclaims, "Men are the new women," then it's time to defend women's rights all over again. Men, women, transvestites - everyone deserves better than this.

Big Shots doesn't place a premium on overall believability. Or likeability.

[F]or this show to work, it will have to interest women viewers in an artificial version of male camaraderie, which could be a tough sell.

Is this really how men behave? If so, it's a sorry state of affairs.

As an ensemble of buddies, they don't exude much chemistry. They bat around cliches about marriage and women and the rigors of being a dude, but they seem to want to be with one another about as little as we want to be with them.

Big Shots, an obnoxious waste of time that's likely the season's worst new show.

Because [Harmon] Feldman has created a quartet of rich guys so insufferable, self-centered and whiny that they make the men of feminist masterwork The Golden Notebook, or even The Nanny Diaries, look positively heroic.

If you can sit through the first six minutes of this show without wanting to let your own blood out, then you're more of a man than those guys on Big Shots.

If the rap against Sex and the City in its early seasons was that the women sounded like gay men, the problem with Big Shots is that the men don't sound like anyone at all, male or female.

"Men? We're the new women," [Dylan] McDermott says at one point, but the plot twists and cheeky remarks don't add up to anything particularly cogent or insightful. Not by a big shot's long shot.

If the pilot is any indication of what's to come, this one doesn't look like it will appeal much to either the powerful or the desperate.

Whimsical in tone, the series blends comedy with drama but exhibits few attributes worthy of its getting ABC's best new-series slot, post-Grey's Anatomy.

Big Shots would have arguably infuriated very few had it presented itself as a more vicious satire of the one-hundredth of the one percent. But it doesn't fail us miserably in evoking the imperiousness of the upper classes.

Perhaps ABC is betting women will enjoy the glimpse inside the secret lives of men, even if one of them, Brody, spends a lot of time complaining about his wife.

We're all for handsome guys exploring their feminine side, but we want posters of them holding babies, not being them. The lesson, I suppose, is that all the money in the world doesn't buy you a brass pair.
