What to Know

Critics Consensus

Borgen returns after an extended hiatus with its emotional heft and political intelligence wholly intact, reasserting itself as the best kind of brainy escapism.

Birgitte’s volte-face feels rushed and unearned. Clearly, the writers couldn’t commit to fully transforming her into a villain. Go to Full Review

... Falls back on a narrative formula (the discovery of oil, ruthless big business) overfamiliar to any Scandi-drama fans. Thankfully, the cast, especially Knudsen, are magnificent and rise above such trifles. Go to Full Review

It’s one of the first shows I’ve seen to reckon with the decline and fall of the archetype of the girlboss. Go to Full Review

Borgen is configured as a present, dynamic series in which it is not forgotten that politicians are people. Sometimes, with many fears and desires for power. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Unlike House of Cards, Borgen doesn’t just cast a cynical eye over politics but makes its dark moments manifestly credible. Go to Full Review

Add to this the superb acting by principal and supporting actors, and the brilliant, multifaceted performance by Sidse Babett Knudsen as Birgitte, and I have no reservations endorsing the fine political juggling on display in Borgen: Power & Glory. Go to Full Review

Andrei D @RT74856639 07/15/2023 Incearca prea multe, finalul e grabit See more Edoardo C @HAROLDO 05/27/2023 I respectfully disagree with almost all the choices of S4. the writing, the absolute stagnation of just one subject, even the dubbing. from the absolute masterpiece to something I sadly, but sincerely, hope will have no further seasons. the blame is not to put just on the weak shoulders of the executives that allowed a bunch of so poor choices. the world in his entire is profoundly changed since S1/2/3. they tried to draw some believable rendering. it's not an easy task. but they failed miserably. for someone who deeply loved the first 3 seasons is been very difficult formulate an opinion so hard. but, tbt, is just what I feel. See more Vanessa R @RT05572679 02/09/2023 Great plot with (almost) the same excellent characters. I could not stop watching! It's politics, the real way. See more John O @ThreeRivers 10/12/2022 Spoilers: I found this four-season go a compelling view of the Danish zeitgeist, its culture and a political system so different from ours in the U.S. that it was simply enlightening. Assuming this was not just drama and fiction but also verisimilitude. What it taught me is that Danes, the only ones of which I really knew were Hamlet (wait, he's fiction, too!) and Victor Borge, are a pretty civilized and humorous bunch, at not quite 6 million people, with a comprehensive government and welfare state that takes care of everyone, at least in theory. The series itself is so well written, produced and acted that one can see why it sweeps the critics' tomatoes ratings, and nearly the audience's too. What an astonishing portrait Sidse Babett Knudsen paints of a confident, determined, female politician who at once feels like our mother, our sister, our lover and the smartest girl in the class. An earth mother whose most basic values are what's good for everyone, and she carries this whole series very well, the political stuff and the personal. All this in a system where eight parties have to play footsies with one another, when they aren't stabbing one another in the back, just to form a big enough parliamentary majority to do anything. Then the rest of the time is spent on keeping the majority to do anything, until someone or other calls for a new election because his/her power is about to erode. We, of course, have two parties, and a few dangling participles like Green, Libertarian, Socialist, who never win anything. And our elections are time set, like clockwork, none of this calling for an election whenever. But I wouldn't argue now that two parties is better than eight and sporadic elections since we have a great deal of gridlock and regular elections, which Republicans are trying to smash since they now want power without voters and a dictatorship with no equality. Can I move to Denmark? Sorensen was a hot number, and I watched this in British English, all these Danes sounding like Brits. So time to time, I put on the Danish language version, and Sorensen's voice was even deeper and more sexy! I watched all 40 episodes in a pretty short time, not technically a pure binge. Great shows for newsies and political junkies like me. When the doc syringed out Knudsen's breast liquid and said it was no tumor, I, an old guy, almost cried. I didn't get the series flow, and actually watched the Power & Glory first, then figured I had better watch the rest in order. The delay before the final season was like the movie "Boyhood," in which we watched a boy literally grow up and everybody change over years, as Patricia Arquette, his Mom, won the Oscar. Birgitte Nyborg taught: Before you do anything, ask: What are my options? See more 07/24/2022 The first three were brilliant. So disappointed with this one. The dubbing is awful! The voices they have chosen for the actors we know in the first 3 are ridiculous. A lot of these actors speak very good English. Looks and sounds unnatural. Spoils it for me. Subject matter is good and important. See more 07/03/2022 Potentially a great series, spoilt by an ideological approach to feminism. But this season less so. Great acting and direction.
