Based on the best-selling novels by Robert Galbraith (aka J.K. Rowling), Tom Burke ("The Musketeers") stars as private detective Cormoran Strike, a former war veteran now working out of a cramped London office. Together with his assistant, Robin Ellacott, Cormoran tackles cases that have, so far, baffled the police. Though struggling with the psychological and physical toll that combat have wrought on him, Cormoran is well-equipped to delve into complex conundrums thanks to his background as a Special Investigation Branch investigator.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

C.B. Strike's latest mystery is its least compelling yet, but Tom Burke and Holliday Grainger's winsome chemistry keeps this detective team engaging.

Heavens what a love story, with a tangled mystery thrown in. Readers, I was smitten. What a great diversion. Dostoyevsky can eat his porridge. Go to Full Review

It's still good, anyway, although I'm not sure we've moved on very far. Go to Full Review

It should play down the will-they-won't-they vibe and concentrate on the mystery, which is largely why we're here. But the plot felt like an afterthought tacked on to their mutual yearning. Go to Full Review

Ultimately, C.B. Strike is formulaic, and approaches investigations using old-fashioned smarts. But while it's not the most action-packed, it delivers an engaging adaptation of J.K. Rowling's stories that fans of good crime-solving tales will enjoy. Go to Full Review

[C.B. Strike] deserves a special mark in the gallery of fictional creatures. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Holliday Grainger's playing of the scene was thrilling, so I'll stay around for tomorrow night's last instalment, if only to savour the unfamiliar London locations. Go to Full Review

Eugenia-alana M @RT98931249 02/18/2025 C.B. Strike seasons 1-3 was solid with cast, characters, and plots to keep me happily following the story. Season 4 however, was s complete letdown The story plot was weak and convoluted--unusual for this series...Cormoran Strike's character just seems sadder and sadder--it's hard to watch his character trajectory. Robin is getting more radical and less believable... And their chemistry is dragging on and on towards nothing. Sadly, as much as I wanted it to, season 4 just did not deliver. See more Alexa S @RT61844756 01/29/2025 I am obsessed with this show. The chemistry between these Strike & Robin is spot on. The story lines are great, Robin and all her "make overs" & voice changes are great... She really makes a great Detective that Strike can't seem to control, they work very well together... I wish they would finally get together. I haven't seen where Season at 5 is listed on American Max as yet and anxiously awaiting. (I thought I read last week the show was cancelled and really hope it's not true)... See more Andrei D @RT74856639 12/07/2023 More episodes does not make it better See more Nancy M @nmack 05/06/2023 Really good script and wonderful performances. Every season satisfies. Tom Burke has a strong screen presence. The plots are interesting and not at all predictable. We're hooked. Looking forward to season 6! And beyond… See more pj m @RT55555596 02/13/2022 More, please. Definitely want more seasons, or at least one more. See more 10/17/2021 Great acting, striking melodrama, with lots of UST Just finished watching (rewatched episode 4 as I'd missed some labyrinthine elements of ep 3). Series 4 is all about unresolved sexual tension (UST) , impressively maintained through 4 hours. In ep 4 Corm gives Robin a hug and accidental brush kiss, with wonderful acting. UST has powered some great movies and TV, but series 4 lays it on thick. The intricate plot has skeletons in the closet of an upper-class family, with various activities which would not be good PR. In the usual manner of BBC series, it's anti-establishment, and intricate: not as good as the first three series. Still I guess that moneyed folks make more interesting drama than non-moneyed classes. This 4 hours is a really "the perils of Robin" with her having the majority of the action and focus (although this is not "Killing Eve" or "Nikita" and the series is titled CB Strike). After every peril, we move on with more UST. Corm's arcs seem to focus on the women who love him and who he doesn't, while his UST for Robin continues to build. Tom Burke does a great job of suggesting the sadness/longing: he doesn't need to say much with that face and eyes doing the acting. To be fair, I guess the team wanted to go beyond a private detective procedural, with the private lives of the protagonists as well as all the suspects. But, series 4 releases Robin from her marriage: great setup up for series 5-10. Excellent visuals: this is not the bright London or England of the movies, but somewhat grungy, low key and low light. That said, the locations are wonderful, a delight to anyone who's been to London 1 to 25 times, or never. Actors fantastic, the leads Holliday (What a name!) and Tom: Robert Glenister as unlovely cabinet minister is tremendous. One thing's for sure, we'll all be waiting for the next book and series to see whether Corm and Robin finally connect on a personal as well as a professional level. Couples movies like Nick and Norah Charles series and Mr and Mrs Smith show a couple emotionally as well as professionally can play well as a drama. But Scully and Mulder didn't kiss until series 7 See more Read all reviews
