Caprica: Season 1 Reviews

May 17, 2011
Caprica took to worldbuilding with great gusto, filling each episode with obscure cultural and religious references that mixed, matched and expanded on elements from the real world.

Who knows how I'll feel about it by season three, but right now, I'm entranced.

Caprica quickly assimilates you in a new world and then spins out a family saga that has far-reaching consequences for everyone in its universe.

The new offering, from executive producers Ronald D. Moore and David Eick (the team behind BSG), stands on its own and in many ways might be more inviting to viewers who are not hard-core sci-fi fans.

Caprica is still finding itself, but it's worth your while, and if it can knit its various elements into a more coherent whole, it could get even better.

Beautifully shot and marvelously acted, Caprica is infused with all manner of intriguing bits of business
January 22, 2010
It's not Battlestar Galactica, in that it swaps out the military components of that show for a bit of teen angst and soap opera intrigue, but I really like the lead performances by Eric Stoltz and Esai Morales.

Caprica is laced with enough subplots and dense, Battlestar-style intrigue that the new viewer will need to work to keep up.
January 22, 2010
On the surface, without the ironclad premise and heightened atmosphere of Galactica, Caprica is, almost by default, a more ordinary show.
January 22, 2010
Although the second and third episodes of the prequel are a little more intriguing and less gummed up with melodrama than the pilot, the overall picture is a world apart from the dynamism and intensity of Battlestar.

Knowing where we're headed wouldn't matter if the journey were inspiring, but Caprica is lugubrious, portentous to the point of unintentional self-satire and, to any non-initiate, impenetrable.

Like Battlestar Galactica, this series promises to be rich with allegory.
January 22, 2010
There's enough going on in Caprica to keep a sci-fi fan, or anyone who likes to settle into a good story, satisfied and even beguiled.
January 22, 2010
Thankfully, Caprica can be enjoyed without any reference to the literal past or the figurative future.
January 22, 2010
Although uneven in places, a quality cast and cliff-hanging episodic twists establish Caprica as an heir that shouldn't disappoint "BG" geeks.
January 22, 2010
What I think will set Caprica apart is how it deals with the premise: with a little soap opera intrigue, a little socio-political relevance, and a whole lot of immersion into another world.

Let's hope the pilot's spellbinding second hour points the way toward greatness.
