Critic Reviews for Chelsea Season 1

Chelsea may be off to a shaky start, but for those who want to wait for the show to find its feet before checking out some episodes, there should be an interesting backlog of segments in a few weeks.
Chelsea Handler is the sort of person about whom people tend to have strong feelings: You like her or you don't and will watch Chelsea accordingly. But Chelsea is interesting beyond its specifics, as a Netflix experiment.
Why? Well, "Chelsea" is still figuring that out.
It all depends on where you fall along the Chelsea Handler enjoyability spectrum. More than any other talk show, this is all about the host. If you like her, give it a try. If not, chill elsewhere.
If Handler rediscovers that bite that we love, that willingness to excoriate her victims with a laugh, perhaps "Chelsea" can have a long life on Netflix. Without that, it's just Goop with Grey Goose.
Handler's longtime fans may be willing to "Chelsea" and chill, but it's difficult to see how this particular offering will expand that narrow base.
It's not as though Handler is admirably swinging for the fences and missing, she's striking out while attempting a bunt.
As anyone recalls from their first days of school, you don't actually learn anything. That's certainly true of Chelsea, too. The premiere is often very fun, especially when Handler's eye-roll-driven plain-talking sense of humor slips in off the cuff.
It's a big gamble for Netflix, but also a welcome reprieve from the current late-night landscape.
If Handler's new show isn't exactly breaking the mold quite yet, this early offering is unexpected in an entirely different way: its host is salty and acerbic as ever, but Chelsea is surprisingly earnest and heartfelt-even, dare I say, mushy?
The idea is that Handler hopes to learn a lot from her new show, though her own rapping to end it is the most embarrassing. Still, not breaking for commercials makes all the difference.
Yes, this is what we've been waiting for: a talk show that is proud to be even dumber than Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show.

Sep 12, 2017This show is equal parts hilarious and insightful. There are elements in here for data nerds, political nerds, comedy lovers and more. Obviously the insights are liberal, and Chelsea throws in her trademark shock-value comedy where appropriate. It is a well-balanced comedy political talk show, and hopefully a trend-setting series for the future of "television" style content.
