Critic Reviews for Code 404 Season 1
All Critics (10) | Top Critics (4) | Fresh (8) | Rotten (2)
While Code 404 didn't always hit the mark in this opener, the energy and enthusiasm were infectious, and with this level of talent on board I will be sticking with it.
This is an original comedy from Sky and possibly their best one, thanks to the cast. The joy is that in another universe this could have been a po-faced drama, and the three leads are sending themselves up.
This is not a brainy, nuanced comedy, but with silly one-liners and Naked Gun-style slapstick, it seems to hit the spot at the moment.
We can see what the boffins and TV format surgeons at Sky were trying to create when they took on re-inventing the long-gone series The Six Million Dollar Man... As with the bungling DI John Major himself, Code 404 only just about works.
Despite the presence of Graham and Mays, Code 404 just isn't funny enough or interesting enough to spend any time watching.
Code 404 is neither the funniest nor the most clever comedy you'll encounter this year. Nonetheless, if the show's RoboCop meets Hot Fuzz premise piques your interest, this is an agreeable, low-commitment binge that's good for a few laughs.
By the time the season comes to its conclusion the comedy dries up, freezes and crashes, refusing to power back up.
If you long for half an hour of sheer silliness, head this way. Graham and Mays are not quite the new Eric and Ernie but they can stand to share the same sentence. Graham is particularly good.
Despite its faults and its clumsiness though, Code 404 isn't a total write-off and is actually quite fun.
Code 404's humour (the script is by Daniel Peak; Horrible Histories and Not Going Out) is wacky and wonderful and In these troubled times it presses all the right buttons.
