Doubt: Season 1 Reviews

February 16, 2017
Doubt gives few justifications for sticking with it, other than an undeniably super cast of actors I'd be eager to watch weekly on a much better show.

Doubt is a legal drama so heavy on the personal that it veers into soap territory.

If it would just focus and let its talented actors play off one another rather than splitting them up amid various tasks, it might end up being something more than just entertaining -- within reason.

It's great to see some of the stars of Doubt back on television, but did their return have to be in such a mess of a show?

Sorry, haters - it is a worthy, highly watchable effort.

For now, though, Doubt is aptly named -- less because of the reasonable-doubt standard Sadie that needs to meet than the fact that those who stick around will be giving this slender vehicle the benefit of it.

In almost every episode, you can see exactly what it's doing. Even so, you may feel compelled to say, "Nice job."

So far it's strictly so-so on the storytelling front, but with some scenes that raise the bar beyond that. Those mostly involve Light, though. And she's not the one who's supposed to carry the load.

Cox sashays away with the show, which ends up being a feeble and not especially imaginative The Good Wife wannabe.

Doubt finds its melodrama at the intersections of law and grace, principles and desire. The themes are there, but the inspired execution isn't.

The fifth episode held my attention. Depending on how Doubt fills in the blanks, it might just be worth your time.

The first hour pushes the point at you so strenuously, it may set your eyes rolling, but don't be deterred: the second and third episodes are much better, and promise a solid, entertaining show ahead.

There's a brazen quality to Doubt that is frothy enough to be silly but grounded... and with such a talented, deep bench of actors, it's usually enough to watch them bounce off of each other while flaunting their impossibly stylish accessories.

Decent courtroom/workplace drama, also a pioneering one.

Amid all the expected, Doubt has an appealing distinctiveness.

When it comes to TV law firms, the one on CBS' wobbly Doubt can't compare to the one on the sturdy Good Wife.
