Emily Owens, M.D.: Season 1 (2012 - 2013)

Season 1
Emily Owens, M.D.

Critics Consensus

Mamie Gummer is appealing in the title role, but Emily Owens, M.D. is mostly a second-rate medical comedy in the vein of Grey's Anatomy.

Tv Season Info

Mamie Gummer stars as awkward first-year medical intern Emily Owens in the only season of this drama set at a fictional Denver hospital. Eager to put her geeky high-school days behind her, Emily tries to balance her internship work with romance, especially when she's reunited with her medical-school crush, Will Collins (Justin Hartley). Interactions with Cassandra Kopelson (Aja Naomi King), an old high-school rival who's now a fellow intern, have Emily thinking that working in a hospital is uncomfortably similar to her cliquey high-school years.

Thanks to the clever writing and a very appealing performance by Gummer, this is one of my favorites of the fall season.

She [Mamie Gummer] injects the ordinary with her own unique prescription brand pick-me-ups, making Emily Owens bearable when it's not fully embraceable.

Annoying as high school and its legacy can be, at a certain point you move on. For the good of the show, Emily should.

[Gummer] will one day need to step out of her mother's giant shadow. At least Emily proves she's got the chops to cast a shadow of her own.

This isn't "Grey's Anatomy" and it's not "Scrubs" either. It's a really well-written and well-acted show about people who are just trying to figure out life while they do their jobs.

While the concept and characters are recycled from countless medical shows that have preceded it, Emily Owens, M.D. is elevated greatly by the talent and charisma of its star, who goes a long way to make up for the show's weak points.

Jul 2, 2018 | Full Review…

The medical situations need some work in the exciting category if Emily Owens wants to be a new Grey's Anatomy, and the comedy-drama mix needs to be tightened if it wants to be a new Scrubs.

Adult life may be like high school some of the time, but it isn't all of the time - and a show suggesting that it is becomes just as difficult to endure as some of the worse memories of high school itself.

It's not a great show, but it's a much better show than you might expect for one reason - Mamie Gummer is so winning in the title role.

On the plus side, it makes Hart of Dixie look like a masterpiece.

Love this show wish they would have continued it!!!!!! I watched CW all the time and I never once seen a preview for this show when it first came out.

Just finished season 1 via Netflix and for the life of me can’t imshine why this show didn’t work out. It’s the durst show that I have seen in a while where the female lead isn’t a selfish neurotic mess. This show was smart and lacked a lot of cheap raunch that most shows have nowadays. I liked it even more than Grey’s Anatomy. I wish this show has been aired on a different network, suited for its potential.

I'm very sad that they didn't make more. I would have loved to have seen Emily be with the boss Dr. It has an amazing story line and had me so interested I finished it in 2 days.
