What to Know

Critics Consensus

Pitched as the Golden Globes' glittering return to respectability, this 81st telecast begins with a belly flop of a monologue and never recovers from there.

Many, many journalists have written about the lack of necessity of awards show hosts in years where a worthy one can’t be found. Koy reminded us of that as alleged joke after absent punchline failed to land. Go to Full Review

Hosting a Hollywood awards show isn’t always a disaster, but Koy’s dreadful performance proved the thanklessness of the job. Go to Full Review

Yes, this is a pretty tough gig, lightly roasting a room full of sensitive celebs who are (for the most part) not game. But still, the writing was tired and uninspired. Go to Full Review

If it’s any consolation for the new-look Globes, Koy took most of the heat for what was a tepid and largely forgettable ceremony. Go to Full Review

Jo Koy was an unambiguous flop as the 2024 Golden Globes host. Some of Koy’s “jokes” made no sense... Others were flat out asinine. Go to Full Review

Sidestepping parts of Koy’s opening monologue and subsequent needless interstitials, the Globes succeed for the most part in the endeavor of not offending anyone. Go to Full Review

Jim G 01/13/2024 Host was not funny, period. Some presenters bits were OK, most were awkward. They need Ricky Gervais or someone similar to host. See more Tim S 01/13/2024 Do actual people watch these award shows. I tried to watch the first 5 minutes and couldn't even take it anymore. Good luck Hollywood See more Billy Avery C 01/12/2024 Jo Koy was awkward. Monologue wasn't great. However, I was glad to see so many different races win. See more Tim A 01/10/2024 'Just thank your agent, thank your god, and **** off' If only they'd all take Ricky's advice.... See more robert K 01/09/2024 Zzzzzzzz. Started getting drowsy when the host started talking. See more David L @davidonfilm 01/09/2024 The 81st Golden Globes show was a fun night of celebration and with new aspects, despite a very lackluster inexperienced host Jo Koy but all in all it was still an enjoyable show throughout. It wasn't perfect and but they truly redeemed themselves for why this is a fun show to watch every year. The show itself was MASSIVE improvement over last year's show which I found to be deadly boring, God awful and not the fun Globes show we remember pre-COVID. The reintroduction of longtime announcer Shawn Parr was a breath of fresh air because his absense was very felt last year when they had a female announcer Afi Ekulona who lowed us to sleep last year along with boring piano music. Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner practically saved the show like they saved last year's Oscars. They're producers that now how to make the production of a show innovative and creative with new tricks that haven't been used before. The new camera angles with the presenters facing away from the audience seemed like it risky was but I thought everyone of them were particularly inspired. Every new innovative detail in the production was incredible, the way how Shawn Parr announce the actor nominees with closeups to their reaction shots to the camera in the audience was genius and perfect. It's something that normally the Oscars and other awards shows do but the Globes doing made it something that could be carried to future ceremonies of theirs. The featurette of behind the scenes footage of the directors when Shawn Parr announced the director nominees was also a great touch and when they announced song they didn't go to clips they played the songs while panning the camera to the songwriters which was cool. The winners all had great A-game speeches that really spoke volumes and were amazing and great movies that won. Many critics are being harsh on this ceremony when they should've been doing that last year to the boring catastrophe Jerrod Carmichael hosted. If the show hadn't had a host I feel like the show would've gotten much better reviews. Jo Koy's material was terrible but that's mostly due to fact he had little time to prepair and yet they through him in to host last minute after many other comedians said no. Just fast forward through Jo Koy's dreadful monologue and the rest of the show was great in entertainment value. The 2024 Globes gave a very loose and fun return to form reminder why we love to watch them. See more Read all reviews
