Audience Reviews for In Treatment: Season 4

      • Jun 27, 2023

Season 4. Well it was just awful. I cannot see what the critics were reviewing. How the actors were supposed to make something of this with such terrible writing was in my opinion unacceptable. I kept hoping it would get better but each and every time I got to the end disappointed. Actors should not be blamed for this fiasco because the storyline was an impossible task to make good. Lately the critics appear to be so disjointed from the audience on so many levels, I can understand why. What the heck has happened this used to be a great place to get fair and frank reviews.

        So interesting and educational.

In Treatment was one of the best television shows of last year. It unapologetically embraces the minority experience, and the acting is phenomenal. While Dr. Brooke is flawed (as per the formula), I was awed by how she cared for her clients. The writers deftly assembled each storyline, and it held my attention week to week. I was heartbroken that HBO canceled it.

It says something that the 'critics' rate season 4 at 96% but the people actually watching season 4 rate it only 38% percent. Myself, I loved seasons 1, 2 and most of season 3 and have even seen the original Israeli series "B'tipul (season 1). I could not get into season 4 past about 3 episodes. Many things wrong with this show. Uzo Aduba's weight shouldn't be an issue but she looks so stuffed into her clothes and chair and uncomfortable the entire episode it's very distracting. She's also not very likable as a therapist and also seems to make poor decisions one after the other (holding sessions in her living room, inviting patients in after hours for drinks, etc. Uzo Aduba is miscast IMO and doesn't pull off a believable therapist in the least. The overall writing is thin and the patients are not likable or engaging. It seems to me this show has more 'agenda' to push by being more about Dr. Brooke Taylor than the patients. The show nor the actress succeeded in making me care about her or her patients.

In prior seasons, I learned a tremendous amount about psychology and the process of self-discovery. This season is not that. This season is more about current cultural issues and, in my opinion, is ruined as the show attempts to shoe-horn in as many as possible du jour topics. If you prefer a dramatic series, you will likely be far more favorable to the series. Uzo Aduba provides solid acting, but the character is written to deliver maximum drama versus an accurate representation of a shrink. Colin's character is interesting, but i think the "ignorant white guy" angle was un ecessary. Laila's character made little sense to me, with her constant references to the challenges of being a black teen despite the immense gap between her and the average black teen. Eladio grew on me, and was perhaps the most compelling story of the three. But, its just not realistic.

I would give this show ten stars if I could. It is a hidden gem. And though I'm sad it was canceled, it was a satisfying one-season viewing experience--not to mention a masterclass in dialogue for fellow writers. Don't let its cancellation stop you from giving this Emmy-worthy show a chance. I just ADORED this show. I was immediately hooked and found all of the sessions fascinating. I hope more intelligent, driven people who are struggling with adulthood find it. After the loss of my mother, when I was working jobs beneath my skill level and vacillating between self-loathing and you can do anything, I wish I'd had this show. Strangely, I liked Eladio most but identified with Colin more. He made me think a lot about the stories we tell ourselves in order not to face hard truths. As a black mother, the sessions with Laila made me think and consider some important questions. Spoilers..... Laila Episode 6 was just a parenting masterpiece. And I will be forever haunted by the episode where Brooke has a conversation with herself. Brooke's struggles with alcoholism were well done. I've never seen a portrayal of a black woman struggling with alcohol addiction quite like this one with the relationship component added in.

The show has a lot of problems in its fourth season. A LOT. It attemps to explore blackness in particular, but it's hard to take seriously when a teenager (Laila) is used as a mouthpiece, pretentiously disecting latin etmyology one minute and railing against social injustice quite unconvincingly the next. These are goofy archetypes, not characters. It doesn't help that the black therapist is portrayed as incompetent, immoral and sometimes even cruel. Witholding referrals to a pyschiatrist for Elaidio (diagnosed bipolar) could seriously result in a malpractice lawsuit. She divulges heavy information to clients, chides them for not respecting boundaries and then ALLOWS THEM TO DRINK IN HER HOME AT NIGHT. Two out of three of the patients are LGBT, it's sort of shoehorned in. However none of the actors are actually LGBT. The show doesn't even practice the weighty societal remedies it preaches. Literally zero research was done by any of the writers on what psychotherapy actually entails. Very insincere writing that caters to minority demographics, while also patronising them and depicting them as unprofessional or stereotypes. The only character seemed to be the charminly nasty grandmother of Laila, but unfortunately she's not given the screentime she deserves.

I am a therapist myself and loved the first two seasons. And somewhat the third. They were authentic and plausible - as well as well carried through. I was so looking forward to this season. I was excited about a new therapist. But it's dreadful. Totally unrealistic. She is so so bad. She has zero boundaries. Asks all the wrong question. Meh

I am half way through the season and I just cant get into it. She's no Dr. Paul and I find it really hard to like her. There is way too much political correctness and the acting, overall, falls short of what I expected. I binged all 4 seasons and I am really trying to like it. Its her that I find ingenuous. I am hoping that I can come back and change this, but, for today - nah.

Ugh I wanted to like it but nooooo the lead actress…. Bad acting. Feels so fake. I can tell she's "acting" if you know what I mean. Everything she does feels forced and awkward like, she needs some intensive acting lesson.
