What to Know

Critics Consensus

While scattered plotting occasionally drains the fear from its chilling premise, IT: Welcome to Derry compellingly deepens the myth of Pennywise through sharp social commentary, a dreadful atmosphere, and committed performances.

It’s only made more frustrating by the simple fact Welcome to Derry doesn’t have enough material to otherwise fill its runtime, or at least the runtime of the five episodes (of eight) screened for critics. Go to Full Review

The most churny moments come not from the supernatural but from the day-to-day of living in America. Go to Full Review

There's something about this that makes me think it's better as a set of really gross set pieces than it is as a version of IT. ...so much is lost from what I think of as the point of IT, that I'm not sure what this is really supposed to be about. Go to Full Review

It may not be particularly great, or something you'll be thinking about for a long time after, but as far as making a prequel to such a beloved book, Muschietti and his collaborators did just fine. Go to Full Review

IT: Welcome to Derry has impressive horror elements and an immersive setting, but it rehashes a story we’ve seen one too many times before. Go to Full Review

Paolo F @XKP-Producer 4d Welcome to Derry feels like the answer to a question nobody was asking: "What if we made Stranger Things again, but this time we could legally say it was inspired by Stephen King because it actually is Stephen King?" The series follows the now-familiar formula: a group of kids, supernatural horrors, mysterious events, bikes, nostalgia, and plenty of scenes that seem convinced they're building suspense when they're mostly building runtime. Unfortunately, what once felt fresh now feels painfully predictable. The biggest problem is that the show rarely finds its own identity. Instead of expanding the world of IT in an interesting way, it often comes across as a collection of ideas we've already seen done better elsewhere—including in series that were themselves heavily inspired by King. The result is a show that's frequently dull, surprisingly generic, and ultimately forgettable. With so many great horror and fantasy series available today, this is one trip to Derry that's easy to skip. See more Annie W @Annie502 4d This is truly one of the best adaptations I’ve seen I didn’t think much of the characters and the new kids but instantly fell in love it also topt a new stage of horror and the plots are mind blowing they created something that no one has ever risked to do and mastered it See more Dexter E @Dexter007 May 28 A best horror Web sires IT: Welcome to Derry brings back the creepy atmosphere and psychological horror the franchise is known for. The series does a good job building suspense slowly instead of relying only on jump scares. The setting feels dark and unsettling, and the performances help make the story more engaging. Some episodes move at a slower pace, but overall it keeps the mystery interesting and expands the world in a way fans will probably enjoy. A solid watch for people who like horror with tension, storytelling, and a disturbing small-town vibe. See more Lars N @movie_douche May 19 After a strong pilot It seems to be going nowhere fast. We jump from thrill to thrill with some pretty boring filler in between and a lot of mumbo jumbo about pillars and cages. There are strong ideas here and there but to fill eight hours of television this series bites off more that It can chew. See more Autumn M @RT26919073 May 14 Welcome to Derry is a prequel tv series to It. Similar to other modern series, it blends supernatural horror with the everyday horror of being a black person or a Native American in the middle of the century. I liked the deepening of the It lore, and getting to see Pennywise's origin. Without giving away too much, there is also a subplot about the government and Native Americans involvement in keeping It at bay. Excellent! See more Paul S @Traumgeisel May 12 This series is undoubtedly dark and not afraid to show things beyond the norm of Horrorfilms. It is quiet enjoyable to watch and has a unique, but different storyline as the films, which makes me wonder, in which direction season 2 is going to go. Still, I must give some criticism regarding some kids of the main cast. Thats because, in my opinion, Marge and Lilly (and maybe the boy idk how he was called) have incomparibly more depth in their character than the other kids. This is especially highlighted by the extensive introduction of the other characters in ep1. I believe they wouldve had way more potential in the main cast, as they had way more synergy and a "real" personality. From my understanding they are supposed to be like a parallel to certain characters of the films, yet I still feel sad to see, how bleak most of the characters of the main cast seem to be in comparisson. Nevertheless it was an enjoyable watch. See more Read all reviews
