The line between cops and criminals is sometimes blurry. When human nature intercedes and a man is forced to take matters into his own hands, there's not a badge big enough that will stop him. Detroit homicide detective Frank Agnew is used to helping others, but he can't help himself when a loved one is abruptly taken from him by a corrupt element. Vengeance gets the better of Agnew, and now he finds himself and his career at the mercy of fellow detective Joe Geddes, a smart but slimy veteran cop whose misdeeds may involve covered-up murders. "Low Winter Sun" -- a gritty, dark drama played out amid Detroit's underworld -- is based on the 2006 award-winning British miniseries of the same name.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Mark Strong makes for a compelling lead, but Low Winter Sun is too serious for its own good, sagging under the weight of its bleak, brooding tone.

Sadly, Low Winter Sun lacks the lean snap of classic noir. Go to Full Review

Low Winter Sun is a good show with the potential to grow into a very good show. Go to Full Review

If any further evidence were needed that the rugged, anti-heroic white-dude drama is played out, AMC's latest could be Exhibit A. Go to Full Review

The opening credits have a dog with a rat in its mouth, which is pretty much the happiest moment in the whole show. At least the dog is winning. Go to Full Review

This series, adapted by executive producer Chris Mundy of Criminal Minds and Cold Case, starts out feeling as unexceptional, and as forced, as those CBS crime series Go to Full Review

It gets too caught up trying to be a Very Serious Television Drama, rather than an intriguing story told well. Go to Full Review

06/09/2020 Tries to be gritty with rundown Detroit backdrop but characters are just not believable. Lots of yelling and posturing but no content. Never found out why dirty cop was killed in the first place. See more 05/18/2019 Excellent cast. Dark story. Reminds me of the wire See more 08/31/2016 Not the most original plot, however the acting is good and the gripping violence is similar to other corrupt police shows. Nothing special though. See more 06/19/2016 Every smug, self-inflating critic who panned this show is an oblivious cunt who knows words but not entertainment. Thanks for canceling a great show, morons. See more 01/17/2015 To the one review that said the dialog was weak..... I was surprised at the authentic urban street slang that was used that the casual observer wouldn't understand.... Obviously the critics who don't understand the streets and how cold and raw certain areas are, would say that the series is , bleak and brooding. Well there's always the sitcom Friends they can watch. See more 09/09/2014 Like True Detective (not trying to compare the two shows, very different) it may benefit artistically from an unintended cut off of storyline. It has a story arc that I just have not seen from movies or television. Cormac McCarthy esch in its grim, no holds barred, depiction of tragic genre. I am frankly unsurprised at how lowly it has been rated. Unfortunate, I really love Mark Strong's performance. That said, while the result may be unique, the ground covered to get there will feel old for a lot of people. It lacks rich side character to support the story. It feels like a show focused on Strong's character, Frank Agnew. That focus has some trade offs, you won't feel a lot for what happens to other characters. See more Read all reviews
