This series feels perfectly poised to tap into that sudden surge of interest (as well as introducing it to primetime TV audiences), and boy, does it deliver. Go to Full Review

The whole thing feels wildly contrived and designed simply to cash in on the K-pop craze... Go to Full Review

An actual documentary, following actual South Koreans, could have been fascinating... Yet on this show we just have these five Brits, inevitably with names like Blaise and Reese, alternately eating funny food and being told they’re not good enough. Go to Full Review

Watch this at your peril: the tinny song they’re learning (something about feeling “the vibes!”) has burrowed deep into my eardrums and may have to be removed with tweezers. Go to Full Review

I wonder about the premise that the immaculately schooled, somewhat dead-eyed K-pop groups represent some kind of ideal -- and ended [the first] episode feeling pretty patriotic about good-natured British bumblers. Go to Full Review

L. F @RT68678650 Jul 18 Oh dear. I'm really not sure what the makers of this show were thinking! 5 young British guys are sent to Korea to be trained as a K-pop band... but they're not a K-pop band, which is where the premise instantly falls down. We're not told how or why these 5 were chosen or what they hope to get out of the process. To be clear, this isn't a slight on the band members themselves, who all have the usual qualities one might look for in a boyband. Sadly, the show makers' attempts to shamelessly cash in on the K-pop trend is pretty embarrassing & lets the band down massively. You end up feeling very sorry for these guys who are all very sweet, enthusiastic & hopeful during the process, but are basically set up to fail. In order to conform to the K-pop industry's expectations, band members are asked to sing in keys which are way beyond their natural vocal registers, all while performing the usual high energy dance routines. If they're not going to be supported to nurture their natural singing abilities, why exactly were they selected? The band are treated like western pawns to be molded & fetishised by Korean audiences, which is pretty gross. It gives viewers a tiny bit of insight into the highly manufactured world of the K-pop industry, although it's pretty clear the band are (thankfully!) not being subjected to the same processes/standards as actual K-pop hopefuls who attend notoriously intensive & cut throat training camps for years before being launched. Are the band staying in Korea to continue their careers? No. So what exactly was the point of it all?! Also, the fact that their first single wasn't released immediately as the series finished airing was a major fail on behalf of the record label! Hope they move past this & go on to better things.
