Jacob B @RT89309114 05/27/2023 The weakest season of Millennium, Chris Carter returning to a more hands-on role compared to how uninvolved he was in the preceding season may have contributed to the shows cancellation. There are some genuinely good episodes such as the Jordan-centric Saturn Dreaming of Mercury, the return of Lucy Butler, another Christmas episode and the episode where Peter Watts' daughter gets kidnapped, the actors are clearly giving it their all with the material they have to work with and there is some legitimately well-executed nightmare fuel, possibly owing to the more realistic horror without its sister show's sci-fi trappings. Also, Frank's interactions with Jordan are as endearing as ever and remain the most consistently good parts of this show. The main issue of the third season of Millennium is that unlike the second season, which gradually eased people in regarding its rebooting, the third season's change in status quo happens too abruptly, with Frank Black returning to the FBI and he's friends with this higher-up who never gets a proper introduction. Millennium loses its identity this season and feels more like an X-Files ripoff half the time, a fact that's made even more glaring when you consider how actual X-Files-inspired shows became well-received in their own right. The Millennium Group is evil now meaning they're basically the Syndicate and new character Emma Hollis was clearly made to give Frank Black a Mulder/Scully dynamic. While not an outright carbon copy of that iconic duo, when you learn that the character was created as a "skeptic" for Frank, it makes it clear that Chris Carter and his yes-men wrote the character with Dana Scully in mind. She even has a dead sister named Melissa! But even if we're to judge the season on its own merits and look past the drastic retooling, the episodes tend to be forgettable most of the time. I don't think any of them are remarkably awful but they really aren't all that great half the time. Of course, what do you expect when one of the episodes had the infamous stunt-casting of KISS as guest stars? The season finale was rather bland as well and it didn't seem like the threat was big enough to justify an ending scene that sets up yet another change to the status quo because nobody could make up their minds if this was meant to be like Se7en or The X-Files sans the paranormal aspects. The tough act to follow that was the second season finale didn't help. And while we're on the subject of finality, that seventh-season episode of The X-Files that concludes this show? A passable X-Files episode but rather underwhelming as a series finale for Millennium, due to having Mulder and Scully solve all of Frank's problems for him. Of course, this show's mythology was getting convoluted in a way that The X-Files never did, even after the revelation that was Chris Carter's lack of forward planning so maybe it's for the best that things were handled this way. All in all, the third season of Millennium isn't awful but let's not mince words, it was a mess. Maybe Fox should've just cancelled it after the second season. After all, that is the reason why it ended on such a chilling note. Think if this show ever makes its way to Disney+, its popularity will skyrocket and Lance Henriksen will finally get his Millennium movie? Hmm, sounds optimistic but I wouldn't hold my breath. See more 04/25/2019 Chris Carter takes back the reins in Season 3 of Millennium and tries to get back to the show's roots...and fails miserably. After the death of his wife Frank Black moves to Virginia and becomes a consultant with the FBI, and works to expose and bring down the Millennium Group. The show does a complete 180 and makes the Millennium Group the villain. And in a move just as bad, Lance Henriksen is paired with a new co-star, Klea Scott, who has no charisma. However, there are several interesting and exciting cases-of-the-week, and the show still managers to draw a number of interesting guest stars; including Art Bell, James Marsters, Jon Polito, Keegan (Connor) Tracy, Amanda Tapping, and KISS. Plus, Terry O'Quinn continues on as a recurring character despite the shift of Millennium into the villain. Yet while it has some things going for it and delivers some thrills, Millennium's third season is clearly going in the wrong direction, and lead to the show's cancellation.
