Acting as a marked improvement over the uneven Season 4, Season 5 is six Very Good to Great episodes back to back. Additionally, Season 5 is very likely Red Dwarf at its most High-Concept in terms of Sci-Fi, with stories such as Quarantine, The Inquisitor, Demons & Angels and especially Back to Reality offering some genuinely rich (if out-there) ideas worthy of a serious sci-fi movie, or at least above-average episode of Doctor Who or Star Trek. The comedy is just as strong as before, and all 4 characters, as well as actors, are top-tier. The show also, like Season 3, has a new look, and honestly this is the best looking the show ever got during the classic era - the H on Rimmer's forehead looks high-quality as is his green/red hologram jacket, Kryten's head looks more sleek and streamlined, the sets are substantially more artistic and colorful to look at, the rooms more lived-in, the lighting more atmospheric and both the pyrotechnics and VFX are a notch better. "Back to Reality" was the episode that Steven Hawking himself praised as his favorite, and it is understandable why, as it's actually pretty epic, but every other episode is actually very, very good. Some are just comedic, like Terrorform and Quarantine, while others like The Inquisitor and Demons & Angels having thick atmospheres and a genuine sense of dread, and Holoship acts as a great character study for Rimmer, as well as his relationship with the others (not as much as 'Marooned' from S3, but still good). Six episodes, all consistently funny, all consistently well plotted and well-produced. In many ways, Season 5 might be the best place to start if you want to get someone into the show (considering Season 1's quality...), as these episodes are very easy to watch. Top-tier Red Dwarf material.

Hands down the best season of the best show ever made in my opinion cause despite what I say it’s fine if you don’t like it

This season the writers admitted the distraction of making an American Show interfered with this show. The cast felt betrayed by the writers as they went to America and developed a Pilot but recast their roles other than Kryten, who had only been in the last 2 seasons. On a whole this season is just not as funny and Holoship, Terrorform and Demon and Angels are 3 of the weakest episodes so far. On the other hand the other 3, are 3 of the funniest with Quarantine and Back to reality both being classic episodes. It still retains the charm of Red Dwarf and even the weaker episodes have fun parts.

More hilarity and hijinx from the crew in their fifth outing... A lot more personal exploration than in previous seasons. Some hysterically scenes this year. Best Episode: 28 - Quarantine
