Yet, despite being one of the most intelligent and smartly written dramas of 2010, its glacial pace marked it out for cancellation from an early stage.

"Rubicon" relies on the tropes of most dramas, like ominous string music and a snail's paced narrative, releasing just enough plot points to make you wonder what the hell this show is all about.

Each one is a little more frightening and mind-blowing.

There are some great characterizations and attention to detail. If you stick with the series, you'll be treated to a lecture on the perfect briefcase by the droll Michael Cristopher that's worth the price of admission.

Once you adjust to its pace and the pieces click softly into place, you get caught up.

If you enjoy following complex machinations, however, and enjoy watching smart TV characters try to figure them out, Rubicon is your ticket.

Rubicon is a throwback to a simpler time for conspiracy theories, rather than aliens or supernatural forces.

I am happy to bathe in its careful, bad-dreamy atmosphere, to go with its twisty flow.
August 1, 2010
It's a little aloof, a spy show without the usual espionage theatrics. That may take some getting accustomed to, but in these early episodes, Rubicon makes a strong case that it's a series that's worth the effort.

Rubicon is not a show for the impatience, and it has the kind of ambitions that could set viewers up for a letdown. But so far, I admire its intelligence.

It's not completely original, but there's currently nothing on TV even remotely like it.

The performances have so far been sharp enough to ward off outright drowsiness.

This pleasantly low-key drama has little trouble creating an atmosphere.
August 1, 2010
The pilot isn't groundbreaking, but it is promising enough to justify waiting for the full two-hour premiere.
August 1, 2010
One has to wonder how long Rubicon can sustain any kind of mass following while keeping its secrets so closely guarded.
August 1, 2010
I couldn't shake the feeling that the network of Mad Men had produced another period piece, one infused with paranoia that's meant to be contemporary but somehow isn't.
August 1, 2010
For a show that's supposed to be a spy thriller, there aren't a whole lot of thrills in Rubicon.
August 1, 2010
It takes itself so seriously that it is a contender for the most pretentious entry on the already crowded field of conspiracy-theory dramas.
