In an ancient land a battle for survival plays out like a "Game of Thrones" episode, but the warring clans here are lions, leopards, hyenas and wild dogs. Set in the remote wilderness of Savute, Africa, "Savage Kingdom" is a rare look at rival animal factions fighting for decreasing resources in a parched region. Complete with brutal violence, unexpected deaths, surprising characters, and even romantic interludes, each episode is told from one predator's point of view. The result is a dramatic, character-driven story shot by award-winning Botswanan filmmaker Brad Bestelink. Emmy-nominated actor Charles Dance narrates the miniseries.

Caleb N @Calraptor2617 Feb 4 A super impressive feat of filmmaking! While more visually eye-opening than factually accurate, Savage Kingdom represents a bold direction for National Geographic, but it definitely pays off. The cinematography is strikingly gorgeous and professional. Charles Dance narrates with grim precision, but also brings surprising personal emotions to tense and heart-breaking scenes. The first season had a great structure following different carnivores for each episode, with their stories converging very cohesively. It could be better with more scientific and informational insight on the different animals, and more accurate descriptions of their behavior rather than human parallels. But this show is still spectacular. It’s so brutal, too! It’s a great insight into the raw violence that defines nature’s food chains. Having watched the first season, it’s one of my favorites, but rewatching the third season has me thinking that the third entry is my favorite. See more Read all reviews
