It’s perfectly jolly to watch and there are some decent turns and funny lines — such as a magazine for gym-going priests called Muscle Mass. But it does meander, and nothing is making me crave the second series for which it is clearly set up. Go to Full Review

[Considine] and Hendricks’s hard work runs aground on a screenplay that can’t make up its mind how Oirish it wants to be and which then crowbars in a flying saucer mystery with all the subtlety of Father Ted’s Jack Hackett downing a bottle of poitín. Go to Full Review

How much you enjoy Small Town, Big Story will depend on how you feel first about whimsy and second about genre mashups. If your appetite for both is large, then Chris O’Dowd’s creation (he wrote and directed) has plenty to make you happy. Go to Full Review
James Croot The Post NZ Jul 11
With Considine in top form, some pitch-perfect parodying of series like Outlander and lashings of Irish humour, there’s plenty of craic to make this worth a crack. Go to Full Review
Ann Marie Hourihane Irish Independent 03/06/2025
So this is a mess, really. Despite clever people working so hard on it. Despite its ambition. Go to Full Review

The show effectively captures the Irish humour Chris O’Dowd is known for, but don’t expect outrageous slapstick humour, but more relatable, gentle laughs and occasionally a touch of pathos. Go to Full Review

C M @colmoni 6d I watched the first episode. I won't go any further. I am from the county Drumban is supposedly in. The fact only one of the cast has an accent that could plausibly be from there (the grey haired sheep farmer) broke immersion. Paddy Considine's accent was doing a Mrs. Doubtfire style tour of Ireland - Belfast one minute, down south the next. The script was littered with Americanisms - 'counter-clockwise' (anticlockwise), 'medical college' (university, with a medical faculty). The scene at the GAA practice felt phoned in. The whole thing felt inauthentic. Most people wouldn't notice this. What people would notice is the meandering pacing, dreary music, cringey jokes, unlikeable characters and no particular reason to bother with episode 2. See more Gareth V @geewah Feb 26 A pleasant but uneven comedy-drama. It has charm, a solid setting, and flashes of smart character work, but it never fully delivers on the scale its premise suggests. See more James G @James30000 Jan 10 Very funny and well worth watching. Hope for season 2 See more Peter S @RT17010941 Sep 3 I just finished all 6 episodes in 2 days. Hard to believe this isn't rated higher. Its such a quirky mix of elements all thrown together with a light humour. But there are also a few scenes that hit a massive emotional punch towards the end.... loved it!! I so hope they make a season 2... See more Angelina P @ScreenQueenAngeline Jul 26 Fantastic stuff in the style of recent Irish comedy series like Derry Girls, Bodkin, & Obituary. Written, produced & directed (plus a quick 2 episode guest appearance) by Irish comedian/actor Chris O'Dowd with divine Christina Hendricks as a hard-nosed US TV producer to add to the star power. Pleased to see Irish darling Paddy Considine take centre stage in this quirky gem, but it really is the ensemble that makes this one work as well as it does. Pleased to see more humour & stories told by Irish voices hitting the screens. English/US versions of this sort of thing always turn out 'quaint', only the Irish can do proper dark & quirky humour. The US & parts of the stuffy UK may not get the joke, but down here in Oz we're on the same page! See more Janet R @RT05821940 Jul 21 We heard Chris talk about it on a podcast and checked it out, so glad we did! this show has a bit of everything. Great cast and the beat script writing I’ve heard for a very long time. Absolutely blooming loved it! Haven’t chuckled out loud watching tv for ages - roll on season 2! See more Read all reviews
