Critic Reviews for Star Trek: Discovery Season 1

All Critics (70) | Top Critics (18)

For now, the new Star Trek feels less like a reboot than an attempt to turn sci-fi's most cerebral property into a glum Star Wars clone.

As the medium of television evolves, it's comforting to know that Star Trek is there to evolve right along with it.

Sep 25, 2017 | Full Review…

While Discovery is fundamentally quite different from much of the Trek that's come before, its engagement with the franchise, and willingness to both celebrate and examine its core values, keep it true to that spirit.

The actor playing this mysterious Gabriel Lorca -- Jason Isaacs -- also happens to be a major talent who instantly lifts Martin-Green's game. These two appear to be a winning, multidimensional combo.

In short, [Discovery] announces a series of high ambition, fit for purpose for the golden age of TV.

It's got enough good stuff to keep me watching. Nonetheless, it feels a bit too obsessed with Star Trek for its own sake, rather than as a vehicle for telling stories with broader resonance.

Sep 29, 2017 | Full Review…

It leads to reflection, has well-defined characters, exciting battles and some moment of genuine wonder with the infinity of space. Pure 'Star Trek'. [Full Review in Spanish]

Aug 9, 2019 | Full Review…

It has been a good start, in which we had the chance to know great characters and I felt myself on board the ship. [Full Review in Spanish]

This messy iteration is not what Trekkies deserve.

Feb 1, 2019 | Full Review…

The effects are suitably impressive, the characters and premise are compelling, and a clear effort has gone into producing something new and different that still upholds the spirit of hope and optimism the entire franchise embodies.

Audience Reviews for Star Trek: Discovery: Season 1

An incredible season. Being a huge fan of the franchise, especially tng and ds9, I was delighted that discovery stayed true to the genre but brought fresh new characters and stories. Michael Burnham is a fantastic character, staying true to Starfeet's ideals in the face of absolute adversity. I loved season 1 so much I watched it through twice in succession.

Social Justice Warrior FTW. What a lame concept! Michael also upstages everyone. What a fking genius!

    After a long time ....

The problem is not that this is not "classic star trek", the problem is that this is just a horrible show period

    Great first season!!!

Great TV CGI. Decent plot lines. Obvious, but uninterfering social agenda. Out of tune with previous Star Trek TV and movies. Promising, but overly dramatic.

Not quite the classic Star Trek feel, but a good sci-fi romp nonetheless. The characters are well written, and Michael Burnham is a good example of a dynamic and kick-ass female lead (which we need oodles more of). Season 1 is great, while season 2 is a travesty, don't watch season 2. They take everything good about the show and throw it out the window.

Forced diversity, representation quotas and inter-sectional politics is not desired in entertainment. The only thing that makes the show tolerable is looking past the BS and knowing it is a nonsense narrative that is being pushed in all areas of politics, entertainment, media, social media and virtually every establishment. That is the ONLY why I didn't give is the lowest rating.

    Better than expected!

Take away the pretty lights and CGI, all you're left with is SJW propaganda and a Mary Sue in space. The 1 1/2 stars are just for what the writers didn't completely screw up of Anas' storyline....that they stole.
