With less canonical baggage and a welcome dose of character development, Discovery continues to forge its own path and is narratively all the better for it.

It was a bit better than the seasons before, but it's not like that means much... I always started again and thought maybe the next season will be a bit better, but that's the last one I watched.

It's just a bad show at this point that doesn't hit on any points of quality that previous Star Trek shows have.
  • Jul 11, 2022
Ugh, absolutely terrible. As a life-long Star Trek fan, I had to quit watching during this season. I was not able to force myself to continue.

    this season is a garbage.

A small improvement over the first two seasons, but many of the writing issues persist that prevent the very few new interesting sci-fi ideas from flourishing. Stories are still character rather than topic-driven, but the characters have nothing interesting to say. There is allot of lazy deus ex machina and handwaving going on to the point that the universe feels random and incoherent, approaching Rick & Morty level of absurdity and "anything could happen at any time for no reason whatsoever". Which is fine for a comedic cartoon, not so much for a sci-fi show that tries to have a hard science veneer. The science itself is still largely absent, with technology being treated as magic with bits of pseudo-scientific technobabble thrown in. (Star Trek has never been hard sci-fi, but there were attempts to keep it more grounded in science than, say, Star Wars. Discovery has thrown that out the window and embraced Star Wars magic.) If you enjoyed Star Trek for its sci-fi and philosophy, I recommend "The Orville" which is like Star Trek: The Next Generation with bits of humor thrown in. Orville is much more thought provoking than Discovery or Strange New Worlds. Ironically it seems that Strange New Worlds has copied a number of elements from The Orville in an attempt to be more like Star Trek: TNG.

By moving so far into the future, the show really gets to explore and breathe in a whole new way for the first time in this season. Michael goes through some really excellent growth, as do the rest of our crew. Truly wonderful.

Terrible show not true star trek so many issues bad characters bad story and Michael burnham Centre of the universe plus all the crying is annoying

This show just keeps on falling towards a black hole.... They are trying to do way too much, the emotions an overly thick and dense, almost like this is a group of angsty teens who have been given a star ship a told to act like adults. At one moment, these guys are having some of the most ridiculous emotional moments, the next they are literally deus ex machina style saviours of the whole Galaxy....... The level of grandiosity is painful, and the characters are stale and no longer believable. I mean, Adira Tal, is this a serious character? This individual is convoluted and literally dripping with self-pity, and yet she is making decisions on a whim that even a character like Picard would balk at.

Its crazy that a lot of these viewers that hated season 1 has still came back to watch Season 3, while I am slightly upset about how the source of The Burn was explained can not take away from what the writers and directors were going for. It shows that emotions are very dangerous and that it has the potential to be truly devastating but you can get through it. The characters have completely settled into their role and are also facing their own difficulties leaving the past and everything that they known. Open your eyes people and see what is really going on. Amazing work and ive been a fan since the very beginning!!!

Bucking the trend of previous Trek shows (in terms of getting better as the series goes on), the overall story telling is worse. Interesting concept, just not executed that well. This is where I get off the Star Trek merry-go-round.
