The stylised visual palette speaks to Maul’s tortured extremes, which is helpful because the writing doesn’t add a great deal to a character who has most often been a menacing adversary. It’s one for the dedicated fans.

Dynamic, expanding on the lore in a compelling way and just really entertaining. While Andor delivers a peak Star Wars experience outside of the struggle between the Jedi and the Sith, Maul: Shadow Lord provides the peak Star Wars experience of dynamic and well-paced clashes of lightsabers as well as the classic tension between the Light and the Dark. The animated art style is a forte of the series, allowing for crisp fight visuals and stunning backgrounds, which, as some sluggish live-action fights prove, is not at all a given in the recent Star Wars franchise productions. Perhaps the strongest and at the same time unexpected side of the series is the lack of ‘Disneyfication’ in the shape of naive fights with no consequences and nuance-less script, good enough if it helps push merchandise. If the first season’s setup is any indicator, season 2 is looking like a potential masterpiece.

The animation is on another level. Unfortunately... For a 10-episode season, surprisingly little actually happens. It honestly feels like the main plot could have been told in a feature-length movie without losing much. The pacing is slow, but not in a way that builds suspense-it just feels like the story is constantly waiting for something to happen.
