Rose Matafeo is a stand-up, and she is often very funny, if not terribly subtle, like Jessie.

Kiwi comedian Rose Matafeo has infused the six-part rom-com she created, co-wrote and stars in with a witty sense of humour and a freshness, as well as a clear, deep love for the genre.

This unashamedly sweet romcom -- stay with me -- is such a delight that even those who find the genre outdated and saccharine will find it hard to dislike.

Dating Tom turns out not to be the worst thing that's ever happened to Jessie, and watching their story unfold is one of the better ways you can spend a night or two bingeing TV.

It's easy to watch, but other than Malafeo Starstruck doesn't really have any standout aspects to it, which makes watching it less of a heavy love affair and more of a pleasant way to pass the time.

[Matafeo's] signature blend of blurted quips and awkward physical comedy gives Starstruck a tantalising fizz of real-world possibility. ... it's rich in offhand hilarities that land lightly.

The trick here is not necessarily diverging from a particular format, it's what those writers do with the playgrounds they work inside. Matafeo excels in this regard.

What makes Starstruck work so well is that it doesn't attempt to reinvent the format...

Matafeo is the heart of the show, lighting up the screen with all the energy of a screwball comedy lead.

"Starstruck" often feels like a one-woman show, with a much greater emphasis on the com than the rom, but Matafeo and the dryly funny Patel share the kind of relaxed, banter-y chemistry that makes or breaks shows like this one.

Starstruck shows us that the kind of charm we're craving from Hollywood doesn't necessarily have to come in familiar modes, nor does it need to cleverly break every rule in the book... It's both the romcom we asked for, and the one we deserve.

Cosily charming rather than in any way daring, Starstruck is the perfect vehicle for Rose Matafeo to channel her devotion to the romcom, and put herself back in the screen shop-window now that her live career is on hold.

Matafeo is a bundle of enthusiasm, and your enjoyment of Starstruck will depend entirely on how far you buy into her brand of chatty, physical humour.
June 14, 2021
Starstruck is sweet and sometimes quite funny, and Matafeo is mostly winning.
June 13, 2021
A romantic comedy that understands, respects, appreciates, and celebrates the genre, all while still carving out its own unique place in the category.

It's enormous fun as long as you don't squint and think too deeply about the plotting itself.

Starstruck is just a really enjoyable, funny, romantic series with a wonderful cast that you'll smash through in a night and probably recommend to friends.
June 12, 2021
If "falling for a movie star" is the potential hook, Matafeo is the one doing the reeling in and doing it with all the confidence that Jessie has.

The charm of Rose Matafeo and the chemistry she has with Nikesh Patel is more than enough reason to watch Starstruck.
June 9, 2021
"Starstruck" is a charmer, despite it's unlikelihoods and its conventional "Notting Hill"-esque moves.
