Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip: Season 1 (2006 - 2007)

Season 1
Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip

Critics Consensus

A victim of poor timing, Aaron Sorkin's Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip found his trademark writing style intact and marked a welcome -- if unfortunately short-lived -- return to television for numerous cast members.

Critic Reviews for Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip Season 1

All Critics (24) | Top Critics (12)

The real standout performance on Studio 60 is by Steven Weber, who plays the chairman of the network. Weber is incredible here, oozing slime at just that level of viscosity you'd expect from a corporate overlord.

It's not just that the sketches aren't funny, although they're not... Ham-handed sketches wouldn't be so problematic if Sorkin hadn't set Studio 60 up as a call to arms for quality TV.

Perhaps the sly idea behind the clunky title ``Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" is that viewers will come to think of the new NBC series as simply ``The Aaron Sorkin Show."

The agile humor and light, sharp intelligence permeating the script make Studio 60 [on the Sunset Strip] far and away one of the season's best new dramas, if not the top entry.

Don't believe what you read about how terrible it supposedly is; Studio 60 has a lot to recommend it, from some whip-smart dialogue to an absolutely ridiculous cast list.

It feels more like Aaron Sorkin doing an uncannily entertaining job of mocking himself, which surprisingly makes for pretty engrossing dramedy.

I'll take a little preach, but if the show's not careful, it'll implode as a result of its own weight. But "Studio 60" is rife with potential, and if Sorkin and company can find the happy medium here, it could be a real winner.

"Studio 60" not only hits one out of the park for 60 full minutes, it instantly makes you realize just how damned good Sorkin was in the first place and how much he's been missed in the television landscape.

Studio 60 takes comedy so seriously it goes full circle and becomes comic.

Now if Sorkin only agreed to let some comedy writers in to write those sketch comedy scenes, we'd have twice the reasons to stay tuned.
