Hundreds of years in the future, things are different than what humanity is used to after humans have colonized the solar system and Mars has become an independent military power. Rising tensions between Earth and Mars have put them on the brink of war. Against this backdrop, a hardened detective and a rogue ship's captain come together to investigate the case of a missing young woman. The investigation leads them on a race across the solar system that could expose the greatest conspiracy in human history.

Such a highly-addictive series thanks to the phenomenal production values, terrific characters, meticulous world-building + intriguing plots with genuinely-high stakes. It's everything one wants in a sci-fi series, or any TV genre for that matter.

The Expanse is one of those shows that easily lives up to its name. Not only does the title evoke the vast and dangerous emptiness of space, but this is a show crammed full of detail and interaction.

The Expanse is written like a role playing game. They came up with a setting and then just rolled some dice to glue attributes onto some clichéd characters that play around in that setting. That's the entire thing. They consistently tease you with the promise of a larger story emerging from this murky soup but it never actually does. Stories require endings and an ending would doom the cash cow of the open-ended setting and the bottomless cup of contrived cliffhangers it comes with. By the third season it's just full-fledged survivor porn. A massive catastrophe strikes, somebody tries to fix it and makes it worse. Somebody else tries to fix it and makes it worse still. They have a little fight and then the problem magically solves itself just in time to set up the next episode's catastrophe. The remainder of the entertainment value stems from making the woman who sounds like she's dying of throat cancer say some swears. You'd have to be a Millennial to think this is groundbreaking.
