The American Gilded Age was a period of immense economic change, great conflict between the old ways and brand new systems, and huge fortunes were made and lost. In 1882, young Marian Brook moves from rural Pennsylvania to New York City after the death of her father to live with her aunts Agnes van Rhijn and Ada Brook. Accompanied by Peggy Scott, an aspiring writer seeking a fresh start, Marian inadvertently becomes enmeshed in a social war between one of her aunts, a scion of the old money set, and her stupendously rich neighbors, a ruthless railroad tycoon and his ambitious wife, George and Bertha Russell. Exposed to a world on the brink of the modern age, Marian must choose if she will follow the established rules of society or forge her own path.

Not a Must Watch
The fact that Julian Fellowes has a done a lot of research for this will be appreciated by a lot of people and especially for those who love his stuff. For others they may find it a yawn-festlike I did. Go to Full Review

While the five episodes of his new HBO period drama provided in advance to critics have yet to hit that Poor Mr. Pamuk sweet spot, the potential is here for a simply delicious soap opera. Go to Full Review

3/5
It isn't especially compelling, but it's still three stars because if you like this sort of thing (she says, patronisingly), you will like this. And the hats are tremendous. Go to Full Review

9/10
The Gilded Age raises questions of human nature and acute observations about so-called progress and the inevitability of change. All with sumptuous sets and a Broadway's best cast. Apparently, Julian Fellowes has finally embraced the new world. Go to Full Review

Carrie Coon should be considered an ISI mark for any project. If she's in it, there's definitely something to look forward to. Go to Full Review

Eben W. @Pendrag0n111 Jan 19 The scale is impressive! See more Kay P Dec 31 Such a fun show! Much better than 99% of the crap out there. Good characters, writing, acting, costumes, fiction set in history... if you liked Downton, I think you'll like this! See more Jon M Oct 9 Having been a massive fan of Lord Fellowes other show, Downton Abbey, when they announced this, I was a little bit on edge, as his last big outing, for ITV about Titanic was a rather large flop, but, I was to be engaged from the very first second, and now we are three seasons in, and a fourth on the way, I am a massive fan of this show.. The characters all have their edginess, and fun factors, especially Agnes van Rhijn, played by the brilliant Christine Baranski, who I have been a fan of for a long time, her character is the copy of the Dowager Countess Violet Crawley, played brilliantly by the late Dame Maggie Smith, the quip lines, the looks, the put downs are just perfect, Agnes is one of the reasons I watch, as I just love the way she can put someone down with just two words and then look away with disgust, LOL.... The darker storylines play a part in making this a great series, and I would love to see this run for many MANY years, now that we have no more Downton, possibly !!!! this show fills that missing slot, and some ! You will not be disappointed, from the amazing sets, clothes, set pieces of events, and the brilliant actors, all perfect in their roles, you will love it ! See more Elbert W Oct 6 I'm 2/3 through Season I and loving it. This is not my typical show to watch but I really enjoyed Downton Abby, so I thought I'd give this a shot. The characters are well written, interesting, and engaging. The plot at this point is simple but it pulls you in. I'm sure more will happen to complicated things but so far, the idea that new money is trying to break the social barrier of old money is fascinating. See more Barbara N Sep 2 One of the best series on TV.. i and my daughter absolutely loved it. All 3 seasons. The nail biting drama at the end of each episode, kept us on the edge of our seats. Nicely done. Oh my, i Can't say enough awesome and wonderful things about the wardrobes.... the dresses and gowns where absolutely stunning. . It made me wish that we could purchase and wear these beautiful gowns in today's society. Simply stunning. The show is a 10 out of 10 for me. Can't wait for season 4. See more Dandy L Aug 26 Edith Wharton or Henry James, this ain't. Dull characters, plodding storylines, and hackneyed dialog. The show is lovely to look at but gives you no-one to root for. The new guard is just the same as the old guard, so who cares who comes out on top? Maybe that's the point, but I hesitate to give this show that much credit. The social-climbing wife of the industrialist displays no charm, charisma, or other appealing trait that would draw people to her, just naked ambition. There is no dramatic tension because the industrialist and his wife get the better of their feeble adversaries at every turn, and in the most obnoxious, simplistic ways. Their daughter is described as a beauty but looks like a scrawny, plain child. The friendship between the daughter of the industrialist and the daughter of Mrs. Astor is undeveloped and unbelievable, as are most of the relationships in this series. Little to no character development, just cardboard-cutout archetypes. No chemistry between any of the romantic pairings. There are the usual subplots involving the servants, who are depicted as conniving and juvenile. The two young female heroines are "plucky" and too good to be true. Cynthia Nixon gives the best performance of the lot. Nathan Lane is embarrassingly hammy. Recommend rewatching any of the great film adaptations of Wharton and James and skipping this superficial, facile exercise. See more Read all reviews
