Based on the best-selling novel by Margaret Atwood, this series is set in Gilead, a totalitarian society in what used to be part of the United States. Gilead is ruled by a fundamentalist regime that treats women as property of the state, and is faced with environmental disasters and a plummeting birth rate. In a desperate attempt to repopulate a devastated world, the few remaining fertile women are forced into sexual servitude. One of these women, Offred, is determined to survive the terrifying world she lives in, and find the daughter that was taken from her.

Critics Consensus

The Handmaid's Tale's third season reigns in its horrors and inspires hope that revolution really is possible -- if only the story would stop spinning its wheels and get to it already.

A warning to never be complacent enough to let things get this far; that it is our demise, not our salvation, that lies in trusting the Serena Joys in our lives or underestimating the Commander Lawrences. Go to Full Review

It may be too in love with the slow burn of visual storytelling, but The Handmaid's Tale still knows what it's about. Go to Full Review

June, Serena, and Emily have changed so much since season one, but this episode proves they have a lot more left in them and that the audience should be excited to see where they're headed. Go to Full Review

The Handmaid's Tale deserves to be dinged for some poor plot construction at the start of season three. But these episodes indicate that the larger story of the season will be worth it. Go to Full Review

Matt R. @mriddler Jan 9 Annoying. Slow. Repetitive. Aimless. See more Joseph W @critique477 Jan 8 Season three was a fall off from season one and two See more Lane M @RT31121284 Jun 3 EXCELLENT SERIES- Gets better and better See more Sam G @RT88876806 May 29 It's not a bad one and there are some great moments for sure, but I find it very depressing and slow. Now that Nick and June aren't physically together most of the time, there's no light in the darkness anymore, so it makes it more difficult to watch sometimes. The ending is beautiful though and June has an interesting character development through the season. See more Agatha M @Aggers May 8 At this stage in the series, I find June/Offred increasingly insufferable. Her reckless decisions, irrational behavior, and exaggerated facial expressions are incredibly frustrating. It’s perplexing how poorly her character was written once the source material from the book was exhausted. See more Peyton H @RT40985415 May 4 To recap these reviews: "The writers hate men!" — they hate predatory men, actually, why does that upset you so much? "It's too politically correct!" — in what world is torturing women and forcing them to have children 'politically correct? "June is a bad person!" — flawed female protagonist is a popular theme for a reason, she is relatable because she is complex. Season 2 hurt my stomach to watch because it is just so raw. Season 3 was a lot of stage-setting and politics, much less action, but that does not make it less worthy of the time spent on it. The scene at the end with the gun (you'll know it when you see it) was shocking, and disturbing, and anyone who understands desperation and being caught in the moment can see how someone would get there; it's abhorrent, but it's *real*. Don't pay attention to all of the people whose feelings are hurt because they think this show makes them look bad, they're telling on themselves. Season 3 may not have been as action-packed as Season 2, but it's still phenomenal. See more Read all reviews
