What to Know

Critics Consensus

Featuring an absolutely chilling performance by Steve Coogan, The Reckoning wallows in a sordid legacy where there's scant closure to be had.

Really, it’s Coogan’s performance that carries it, and props to him, as few actors would even consider a role like this, let alone see it through with such a relentless lack of redeeming qualities. Go to Full Review

It is not an “enjoyable” drama and it is perhaps an hour too long but given how much Savile got away with and for how long, it is important that we look it directly in the face. Go to Full Review

If the Bafta juries can get their heads round the idea that they are not giving an award to the man he played, Coogan should clean up. Go to Full Review

Some of the writing is excellent... But the internal monologue is always: should I be watching this? Go to Full Review

The Reckoning is worth making, beyond all of the documentaries or books that will be written about Jimmy Savile. When you characterise, and free of the spectre of libel, you can truly give people a sense of the person underneath the performance. Go to Full Review

Courtney Aug 14 so unbelievably boring. See more Joshua C @Jo2go 06/29/2024 Despite Steve Coogan's chilling performance as Jimmy Savile, it's hard to ignore the fact that the BBC glorified and shielded the man for his entire career. It comes off as a callous attempt to score some points with the general public and continue profiting off of him. See more Mark R @Mark67 11/26/2023 I'm giving it 5 stars purely because the cast are excellent in portraying a monster. What I cannot understand is why the BBC felt the need to make it. But then am I hypocritical?. Neilsen, GD, etc, I watch them all. Fascinating insight but totally wrong. See more Dashall F 11/26/2023 I want to rate this Higher but I just can't Steve Coogan is absolutely fantastic in this role truly deserves a BAFTA for the guts to take on a role and his flawless performance he has all the mannerisms The Voice everything perfect and it's chilling I didn't know if I be able to take him seriously in the role he is genuinely frightening however it seems A LOT of artistic license has been used and they also miss out on some parts of his life that I've been documented that I would have liked to have seen in this docu-drama. Each episode of the hardwatch, I had to break it over every days but it's a hard watching all the best ways because it's so disturbing think they could have done a little more with the time they have over four episodes but it wasn't bad and it was over average mainly carried by the excellent performance is especially by Steve Coogan. So if you have the stomach for it it's recommended but I would definitely watch documentary or two first if you're interested on a character study of this truly evil man. There were parts that made me feel sick but again that was to the show's Testament, however despite the full Witnesses they have it's hard to know whether it's blurbed between facts fiction and things that probably happened and that is simply where the problem lies in it not getting a higher review. So recommended but perhaps with some Prior knowledge on the subject. See more sam t 11/07/2023 The show manages to wash over every single aspect of this story with a modern lense apart from Savile himself, who Coogan absolutely nails. Every single response, reaction, attitude, everything that might have been said behind closed doors, it's Al on the nose. It's so far from a historical look. We've supplied modern morals to the most horrific story, and show horned in good people who said the right things at a time, when as Savile would have said, there was a culture of ‘omertà' everywhere. It is incredibly frustrating to be spoon fed this when we can gather our own moral takeaways without the hand holding. It's annoying to think that this rose lense really did ruin an excellent performance by Coogan. Worth the watch for him alone. And worth it for the start and end pieces by Saviles victims which does something to offer those people closure. See more Dave C 10/19/2023 Mis-titled, maybe; poorly executed, most definitely not; simply another serving of abused women at the hands of a deranged and powerful man, it isn't… There, now the common threads of a lot of the more negative reviews have been dealt with, I'll throw my hat into the ring. Coogan's portrayal of Savile is truly a tour de force. It is so good, it is deserving of recognition in the form of various awards. And now we have hit on another major concern of those whom held back from rating this as highly as they should - surely it's immoral and unethical to award such a story a glowing review, or rain praise down on the person leading the performance? Wrong! Coogan isn't Savile… he's acting! And he's done a masterful job of it! Not to mention the writing and overall story have presented Savile in a way that can only leave you feeling contempt and disgust, as well as shame at society for allowing such entities to exist among us. For something so visceral and profound to be impactive, it has to be honest. It shouldn't be easy to swallow, nor should it be relaxing viewing. What has been achieved here isn't a reckoning in the sense we usually use the word, but it is a good summary of a man who coerced and poisoned so many - victims and powerful, influential people alike, and who seemingly escaped the kind of judgment many would have wished upon him See more Read all reviews
