What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Replacement begins at a low hum of plausible anxiety and quickly escalates into deliciously campy paranoia -- viewers looking for a white-knuckling watch will be thrilled by both of the series' tonal registers.

At first, to be honest, The Replacement worried me enormously. Go to Full Review

Perhaps Mad Men, This Life and All About Eve were on to something. In any case, this is the juiciest melodrama since Doctor Foster. Go to Full Review

Morven Christie as Ellen and Vicky McClure as Paula, her too-good-to-be-true replacement, are pitch-perfect in Joe Ahearne's tale, which started out as a thriller in the Hitchcock mode and then took a twist into crime caper territory. Go to Full Review

Joe Ahearne's Glasgow-set drama went out in a blaze of laugh out loud battiness. Go to Full Review

The Replacement, however, was not interested in Ellen and Paula playing a subtle game of chess. Instead, they got to play a hysterical game of Jenga, each scene constantly built up in order to collapse spectacularly. Go to Full Review

Natalie R Apr 25 I came to Google after watching as I was so sure that I was just too stupid to understand the ending properly. I surely missed some key piece of info that would make it all make sense, after all, the first couple of hours had been quite tense, gripping even, at times. Sadly, on seeing the other reviews, it turns out that the ending was just ridiculous and nonsensical after all. See more William F Apr 1 Nail-biting psycho-thriller centering on the office life of women architects. A new woman arrives as replacement for another who will take pregnancy leave. The one leaving begins to have suspicions about her replacement's past, which become acute when another colleague appears to commit suicide quite unexpectedly. The plot develops into a battle of wills and words between the architect and her replacement which comes to a dramatic head. Absolutely gripping, with an interesting focus on emotions and jealousies at the work place. See more Jon C Mar 28 Average to poor script with some good actors. The 3 episodes make it just about watchable but easier to not watch. See more John T Mar 23 I can't even begin to describe how bad this is. That's it, that's all I can be bothered to write about this utter garbage. The baby in the series could have written a better final episode. See more Martha B Mar 21 Not the worst, but significantly dreadful. I don't expect to find programmes like this believable, but I enjoy being convinced by them. This didn't convince me at all. Some good acting in spite of quite a disappointing script. The only character I enjoyed was Ian's mother. I really wouldn't recommend The Replacement to anyone. See more Gary K 10/12/2023 I can't believe how this mini-series took a dive of a cliff in the final few scenes. For most of the three episodes the story was intruiging and full of tension, (apart from the mistake of having all the characters either unlikeable or frustratingly stupid, including the main character Ellen who is weak, emotional and dim-witted far too much of the time) building up to the point that I thought she (Paula) was going to get away with it all, she had been so clever, and that would be the "twist". But there was no need for me to worry about how it was all going to come together with a clever conclusion, because the writer and director didn't seem to feel a need to bother. Just have the two protagonists suddenly act without reason or intelligence, have Ellen do something unfathomable, which inexplicably reverses its effect, have Paula do something that will incriminate herself despite being in the clear and winning, have the police suddenly grasp what's going on and have everything wrap up inexplicably and impossibly. What a total waste of acting talent. How do these people get contracts to make these things? See more Read all reviews
