Detective Harry Ambrose investigates a chilling new homicide each season. He employs some unusual tactics and a deep capacity for empathy to solve his cases. His boundless dedication is driven by his dark past, leading him into powerful and often dangerously intimate bonds with his suspects. "The Sinner" is a blend of a thrilling murder investigation and raw character drama, creating an electrifying ride with standout performances. The series was originally adapted from the novel of the same name by Petra Hammesfahr; however, the book's darker outlook was toned down, and the location was shifted from Germany to Upstate New York.

As always, Pullman is more than up to the task. Go to Full Review

The Sinner feels more like a familiar mystery series than it did at the best points in the first three years. Go to Full Review

A solid mystery series that has proven itself to be an understated little prestige drama with a consistently excellent cast each season. Go to Full Review

(...) At this point it is already clear that the entire series is Ambrose, and in that sense there is still a lot of fabric to cut. Deaths, intrigues, resolutions are no longer necessary: it would be enough just to see him. Go to Full Review

The eight-episode seasons would probably be better as six episodes and about two fewer hours of Ambrose's introspection... Still, the series satisfies an itch. Go to Full Review

As played with brooding subtlety and an inscrutable squint by Pullman, Harry's psyche is often as disturbing as the mysteries he solves in this unsettling series. Go to Full Review

Laurence S @Lazza Aug 31 Awesome TV. Pullman is twisted and brilliant. See more Tjerk v Aug 19 It has it's good bits, the acting is great the story is good. The story however makes a reveal at the end that just isn't believable. Also the new age soul searching in the middle is annoying. See more Juli M Jul 6 This review encapsulates the entire series. It's an okay watch, but dear God, "the tortured soul" persona is SO tedious! (Bill Pullman manages to convey a tortured soul fairly well, but it's hard to know if he was acting or not.) Some of the scenarios stretched far beyond credulity. Ambrose agreeing to be buried alive by a psychopath he knows is homicidal...?!? Sure, Jan... See more John V Jul 4 The series has the same format for each season. The detective gets involved in a murder case and, despite everyone thinking the case is solved, he persists and persists to find out what others don’t know. That format works for season one, but subsequent seasons follow the exact format—and it’s a bit boring. You know they’re going to get eight episodes out of each season, and the plots get convoluted to stretch it out. Acting is good, but after the first season, you know the way it’s going to go. See more Marco B @Mbhshs May 18 it's hard to review this season. there's a slow and chaotic part that turns on itself and then there's a part where everything evolves, changes intensity and pushes on the emotional side. despite the lack of a real co-protagonist and despite the feeling of detachment from the first and second season this fourth season still succeeds in its intent and closes the circle. See more Chris M @Ladybug462 May 4 I was hoping for more. This season 4 started out as promising... Ambrose seems less conflicted and the story line seemed to focus more on the twists and turns of an investigation. But then the story line seemed to fall into the same cookie cutter pattern. Death of someone, investigation, solving the murder... but wait, not yet solved, investigate some more cuz a few questions are not answered, Ambrose is kicked off the investigation but still continues his pursuit, solution found, the end. What ever happened to original thinking? Whoever controlled the writers process on this series did not help them by limiting the process to this cookie cutter format. See more Read all reviews
