Produced by MTV, "The State" is a sketch comedy show, a la "Saturday Night Live" with more elaborate productions. The series makes fun of anything and everything and doesn't pull any punches -- even when making fun of its own network, MTV. Notable comics featured on the show include Michael Ian Black and Thomas Lennon.

It's a vastly overused phrase in criticism, but MTV's The State truly was ahead of its time. I remember seeing the show in its original broadcast on MTV and thinking it was like nothing else on television. Now it would easily fit in the comedy landscape. Go to Full Review

It tapped the 18-to-24, flannel-wearing zeitgeist in a way the networks still can't... There's a spirit of anarchy behind all their hijinks, nudging and winking at the audience as if to say, "Watch this ridiculous thing we're going to do next." Go to Full Review
