The Woman in White: Miniseries (2018)

The Woman in White

Critics Consensus

The Woman in White's campy convolutions can't quite sustain the intrigue it aspires to, but a game cast and pounding pace will satisfy those looking for a stylish -- if somewhat demanding -- whodunit.

Once viewers power through the bafflingly slow first episode, the series becomes equally engrossing and enraging as patriarchal machinations push the siblings into intolerable situations.

Already Fiona Seres' period adaptation of the classic Victorian sensation novel, directed by Carl Tibbetts, is reverberating in the present day.

Apr 11, 2019 | Full Review…

What's so disturbing about the story is the sheer terror of its female protagonists' unknown future-how little understanding or control they have over their fates, in a world ruled by men.

A timely indictment...

Oct 22, 2018 | Full Review…

Screenwriter Fiona Seres follows the outlines of the novel (and finds a way to maintain its multiple-testimony narrative), with some economical compression and original elaboration in the denouement.

Oct 22, 2018 | Full Review…

It isn't often that the components of a thriller can be said to blend perfectly with fiery social commentary, but it is the case with this marvelous production.

Olivia Vinall is luminous in the dual role of unhappily betrothed heiress Laura Fairlie.

Oct 22, 2018 | Full Review…

This adaptation doesn't trust anyone-not itself, not the cast, not us in the audience-to understand that men can, as Marian Halcombe so affectingly stresses in that opening clip, crush women without that crushing necessarily having a sexual element.

The performances are solid and ingratiating. Dance steals every scene he's in as a cranky hypochondriac who is bothered by everything.

All in all it's a mixed bag but if camp whodunnit Victoriana is your thing then it's worth catching.

Audience Reviews for The Woman in White: Miniseries

  • May 30, 2020
If one can deduce the thinly failed ending, it's hardly considered a mystery.
  • Mar 19, 2020
While confusing at times, especially the blonde women, the plot plays out in an exacting fashion. REal hiss the villain stuff.
  • Dec 25, 2019
Dreadful. Despite decent acting from some of the cast, nothing can overcome this depressing tale.
  • Aug 08, 2019
a classic mystery brought to live by a great cast enjoyable i absolutely love miniseries i wanted for each ep to release one by one on this but the great thing about them is you can binge them in a day
  • Apr 12, 2019
watched every episode all at once loved it
  • Nov 05, 2018
    An intriguingly creepy mystery!
  • Sep 01, 2018
liked it, especially the performances of the main characters. While the critics probably know the book and compare the movie to that, I had no prior knowledge so I evaluate the movie on it’s own. It was well filmed, well acted, well edited and with a fitting music score. Not overdone but just right to give you the vibes of intrige and bereavement. I liked in particular the character of Jessie Buckley but I also loved Charles Dance, looking and behaving like an old Toad, almost a comic relief, and Dougray Scott, mutating from a wolflike dominator to a desperate man, trying to escape his own past..
  • May 13, 2018
Atmospheric, some good acting, initial promising lines, but disappoints with weak ending. Some of the convoluted story lines are never quite explained, but somehow tidied up in the end with a nice happy ending. Meh
