White Dragon: Season 1 (2018)

Season 1
White Dragon

Critics Consensus

White Dragon boasts a visually striking setting and a commanding central presence in John Simm, but this neon noir is hobbled by a mystery that doesn't hook and a reliance on its Hong Kong backdrop that arguably borders on cultural exploitation.

A conspiracy thriller which, for better or worse, feels like it could have been made any time in the last 20 years

Thrillers are rarely verbose, nor do they need to be, but this one appears to have lost respect for its audience's intelligence along the way.

Last night's opening episode sucked me straight in and ended with a twist that would make even Bodyguard writer Jed Mercurio jealous.

If it weren't for the background actors Strangers could be set anywhere in the world. Here's hoping upcoming episodes treat Hong Kong almost like a secondary character, an exciting place to steep the mystery in.

Hong Kong-set mystery has stereotypes, some violence.

Mar 6, 2019 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

Universally intelligent performances make even minor characters interesting and hard to pin down even as they are being employed by the writers to well-defined, practical ends.

Feb 28, 2019 | Full Review…

This thriller, starring John Simm, is set in Hong Kong and thus far features good white people and bad Chinese people (sigh) plus a banal script.

Feb 8, 2019 | Rating: 1/5 | Full Review…

Using Hong Kong to turbocharge a dull story is cheating a bit, like using lobster and truffles on MasterChef, but no amount of neon or night markets could mask the overfamiliar scenes.

Feb 8, 2019 | Full Review…

That White Dragon doesn't completely collapse under the sheer weight of its plot and its many characters is a victory in and of itself.

Feb 8, 2019 | Full Review…

A seducing ride it is through dark places, terrifying confrontations, and tightly woven conspiracies elegantly undone.

Each character hid a secret that slowly revealed itself as each episode progressed. It was a slow start but as it moved forward you become invested in solving this mystery along with the main characters.

I usually don't post reviews. John Simm rocks the roll, but the rest of it just left me guessing. I watched this at first thinking it was something else. But while watching I was left guessing what exactly I picked to watch. There was no hook, no characters besides the main character that was memorable at all. The scenery was cool! Umm, but yea, it really fell flat for me.

I consider series like White Dragon to be a â??conceitâ?? project of the production company that made it. The producers and writers, subject the viewers of their product, to rambling, stretched out drama narratives. That make the series unnecessarily long, boring and frustrating to their audiences. If I wanted to view a travelogue, containing the interesting sights of Hong Kong. I would seek out the Hong Kong Department of Commerce, or a documentary on the subject. While the acting in this series is professional, thatâ??s about the only positive thing that I can say about it. Lastly, it really annoys me, the number of TV series and films. That have as part of their plots, a young female character, that is either troubled, an idealistic activist, naïve, stubborn and/or willful. All with the purpose of heightening the drama in the plot. In the age of movements like #Me too, I think more women should reject such caricatures of females.

While I am in the minority of reviewers, my family really enjoyed this drama. John Simm is always fantastic and his performance outclassed the rest of the cast. The show kept us engaged, it was well paced and though sad in many respects it came to a satisfying conclusion.

Interesting plot, culturally realistic enough but sometimes slow
  • Feb 17, 2019
i LOVED it! Yes, Hong Kong played a big part, but the acting and character development was very satisfying.
  • Feb 16, 2019
Painfully horrible acting and script. Cliche after cliche, White Dragon drags on and on. The casting director must have insisted on hiring amateurs only.
  • Feb 16, 2019
Not enough story or character for 8 episodes. Lots of filler that makes otherwise good acting annoying.
