What to Know

Critics Consensus

White Dragon boasts a visually striking setting and a commanding central presence in John Simm, but this neon noir is hobbled by a mystery that doesn't hook and a reliance on its Hong Kong backdrop that arguably borders on cultural exploitation.

Universally intelligent performances make even minor characters interesting and hard to pin down even as they are being employed by the writers to well-defined, practical ends. Go to Full Review

A seducing ride it is through dark places, terrifying confrontations, and tightly woven conspiracies elegantly undone. Go to Full Review

It's not that the premise is terrible or the cast bad - John Simm did a heroic job with dialogue that was sometimes good, sometimes banal. It's just that to become invested in any thriller you must first be invested in at least some of the characters. Go to Full Review

Last night's opening episode sucked me straight in and ended with a twist that would make even Bodyguard writer Jed Mercurio jealous. Go to Full Review

If it weren't for the background actors Strangers could be set anywhere in the world. Here's hoping upcoming episodes treat Hong Kong almost like a secondary character, an exciting place to steep the mystery in. Go to Full Review

Thrillers are rarely verbose, nor do they need to be, but this one appears to have lost respect for its audience's intelligence along the way. Go to Full Review

10/14/2021 A really well produced and acted crime/mystery noir that intelligently borrows elements from the buddy cop genre. I think it uses one too many tropes to really feel like an original production but it does try with the Hong Kong setting and having a strong Asian lead like Athony Wong, even Kenneth Tsang with his limited screen time has a really good presence. I think the conspiracy mystery is engaging enough despite having some typical twists and turns but the series never really pushes far enough to make it's characters worth investing into or making it's HK setting a strong marker. The show is by no means bad with it's only problem being forgettable, unfortunately that might just be one fault too many for a conspiracy thriller drama. See more Read all reviews
